This thread reminds me that I've long had a bit of an interest in these games, because I liked the first Midtown Madness as a kid. But I've just never been interested enough to give them a try. Same goes for Midnight Club games

Midnight club was a fun tech demo. Im guessing it used the same engine as gta3 because it looks and plays like gta just that you stay in the car. This and quake were decent enough titles to hold you over for the big releases that were coming up.

Don't forget Test Drive Off Road Wide Open. It's on the same engine and by the same devs as Smuggler's Run/Midtown Madness 2/Midnight Club, and especially resembles SR. It's also on PS2, but if you can, play the Xbox version. It adds some indoor stadium levels and an unlockable secret free roam level.
