What are the best experiences you can get on this thing?
And I'm talking about on an actual pea-green ghosting DMG screen too, there are lots of games that you can only play on a pocket or better

I'd argue Donkey Kong '94 plays into the strengths of the system more than any other
Anonymous No.11944635 >>11944676
Some games used the ghosting for transparency effects.

I got a DMG gameboy with a few problems, but i managed to fix most of them cleaning and resoldering some points on the PCB. But the screen still has a dead vertical line.
And i have to say: the original screen is fucking terrible. Like its only acceptable from a nostalgic value, because you cant see shit on it.
My problem is that not only if you want to replace the screen, you also have to replace the power board, and those 2 things are above 60-70USD together. And i will be stuck only to play GB games. Damn.

To fix the vertical lines heat up the ribbon cable directly below the screen where the lines are with a soldering iron. You can do it while the screen is on to see live if it's working.

yeah, i tried that but i got no results. Probably if i did it harder i might be able to fix, but at this point im just happy that the console even turns on. I will probably just replace the screen eventually.

I'm almost sure these displays had better contrast back when they were new, but I remember thinking it was hard to see anything on my DMG back in the 90's too. Maybe it was always this way.
The DMG is alright when outside in the sun and playing non-action games, but the GBC display is far less eye-straining and doesn't require quite as much light.

then a gbp, then finally a gbc.
eventually a gba but it was years after launch...

>mario land, tetris, the chiptunes
>staying up late into the night grinding in pokemon red and yellow, shining a tiny keychain flashlight under the bedsheets to see the screen
>the shitty "worm" light that we knew sucked balls even then

It's impossible to talk about Game Boy games on /vr/. Every single thread those fags ruin it with their chinese mods and bootlegs bullshit even though they have a containment, I mean general thread for it.

I don't believe they even play games since they never talk about games, they just jack off to poorly made chinese clones because the marketing from the trendy youtubers told them it's the cool thing to do.

I think Gun Zas is generally considered one of the most impressive examples. It rapidly alternates two background tiles to create a transparent paralax effect. Screenshot doesn’t really convey it, but definitely one of the most complicated visual effects you will get on a DMG.

There was also the Epoch Game Pocket Computer from 1984, made by the guys behind the Casette Vision and Super Casette Vision. This was more comparable to a Game Boy in power, and even came with some puzzle and art firmware. Unfortunately, only 5 cartridges were released for it.

Just stop. You call it the Game Boy, GB or the brick. Also acceptable: the Nintendium handheld system. "DMG" make you sound like a giant tryhard (as is trying to pretend that some games used "DMG effects" that don't workr on other Game Boys)

>What are the best experiences you can get on this thing?
None really, its more a collectable display item and that's the way the majority of its current day fanbase use it, it was not great in its own time and hovers on that line between sad childrens toy and actual game machine, its not even as good as the early colour LED grandstand machines kids 'home arcade' toys. A lot of the fixation with it and general fixation with nintendo comes from reddit hipsterism mainly perople who where not even born at the time.
