This shit didn't sell well because it had a DVD player. It sold well because it was backwards compatible with the original Playstation. Anyone claiming otherwise is a retard.

it sold well because it had a dvd player, was backwards compatible with the original playstation and was a great system on it's own with an extensive library of good games. the fact that you imply that only one of those is true and not the rest makes you the retard.

It was everything. The PS2 was a really awesome console that ended up having probably the best lineup of games in any console's history.

it was both
I didnt have a PSX nor any games for it but I still got a PS2 within a month of launch because it was a good price for a DVD player plus game console
Anonymous No.11946007
It sold well, because, it was based. People back then were always asking “which console can I buy that is the most based” so naturally they gravitated to the PSX2, which was the most naturally obvious choice for a based and redpilled console.

the kids don't understand how big of a deal the DVD player was. another nice benefit of the back compat is that the CD-ROM drive in PS2 is wayyyyy fuckin faster than any of the ones in PS1 models, especially the early ones.

>dogshit controller with the worst D-pad known to mankind that’s literally only good for smelee
The controller was alright. I don't like the C stick but the D-pad is definitely not the worst I have ever seen. It might not seem like much but remember, there is the 360, DS, vita, the playstation dpads until 3 and the n64 all contending with it. The worst thing I can say about it is not the D-pad itself but it's awkward placement.

It sold well because of memes, unironically.
That's the secret of every successful console. They work out the marketing angle, and everything else flows from there.
You can point to a dozen problems with the PS2. It had two controller ports in a post-N64, Post Dreamcast world. It was comparatively a worse piece of hardware than a lot of the competition. It had games like Ico as early selling points, when Ico is lame and boring.
None of that mattered, because it was the PS2.

Okay let's actually look at the facts and see just how plausible the whole "DVD player carried the PS2" myth.
>DVD player release
The DVD player was first commercially available in 1996 in Japan and 1997 in the US. Meaning the player was available to consumers for 3 years prior to the PS2's launch. This means the DVD player had over 3 years to build an install base that would not purchase a PS2 for it's player. Speaking of...
>DVD install base
Prior to the PS2's launch about 14 million DVD players had already been sold World Wide. Meaning 14 million households were not purchasing a PS2 solely for it's player
>DVD player price
Internet sources will state the average price of a DVD player was $600 in 2000 during the release of the PS2. This would appear to be a major reason to purchase a PS2 for a launch price of $300. That is until you realize the $600 dollar figure includes $1200 models that recorded video to DVDs, models that did not make up the bulk of player purchases. The Average non-recording models were actually around $180 by the year 2000 which was substantially less than the price of the PS2.
>DVD player sales following the PS2 launch
In the year 2001 13 million DVD players were sold. A 49% increase from the prior year. These sales do not include PS2 sales. By comparison the PS2 sold 9 million units in 2001, 4 million and less units than the DVD player. If the concept that the DVD player of the PS2 was the main contributing factor to its success then the DVD player should have saw a steep dropoff in sales in comparison but this is not the case.

So in terms of plausibility the DVD being the main selling factor for the PS2 does not hold water when looking at the raw numbers.

tl:dr the dvd player on the PS2 was not what sold the system.

By your own numbers there were 14+13 = 27 million DVD players and 9 million PS2s by 2001, which means 25% of all DVD players in 2001 were PS2s, and 40% of all DVD players sold in 2001 were PS2s.

40% is a really fucking substantial number. It means the PS2 almost doubled DVD player sales in 2001.
That's beside the point that if you ask anyone who got a PS2 in 2001, they'll tell you that it was their first DVD player.

I actually bought a DVD player BECAUSE of the PS2. Wasn't that interested in DVD, not a big movie guy, but since I had just bought a PS2 figured I might as well rent some movies.
I soon learned the PS2 was not a very good DVD player. Couldn't output RGB so if you used RGB scart you had to manually set the video output back to composite to play a DVD then back to RGB to play games in non-sucko vision.
Controlling discs with a gamepad was alright I suppose, just less than fantastic. Fast search was rather slow, same for disc access times.
Utterly awful at dealing with discs with scratches. The damn thing had to be pristine. Sure, that was part of Sony's fucking terrible DVD drives at the time which they eventually fixed, but by the time that happened DVD players were practically given away for free with purchase of anything.
So instead I bought a Toshiba standalone unit with progressive output. Much much better.

Early 00s parents were too stubborn and reluctant with video games.
Just the idea of using a video game (a toy) and a wired video game controller instead of a remote controller, to watch movies, is just a movie session vibe breaker.
Grow up. Your Xbox, GameCube, and Dreamcast failed because they're all undesirable. UNDESIRABLE
The Playstation was every kid's and teen's dream back then. Too bad $300 was a bit steep for the average parent, so PS2 sales only exploded after the first price cut to $200.

>$180 by the year 2000

This is average price claimed is wrong and whenever punched into a search engine, the AI is referencing user content sources that are garbage.

DVD players from non-chinese gray market garbage (Apex) in North America were still $200 minimum for something like an RCA branded one. Sonys were usually upscale for their entry and was still $250. And these were dirt ass basic single disc units for their time. They only had stereo out, some didn't even have a digital audio out. Entry ones didn't even have s-video, only component. Some didn't even have a remote and had all the navigation on the faceplate. It would play just fine, so its not like you gave up much, but if you wanted:

>A remote
>digital out (optical or coax)
>5.1 out
>5 disc changer (so you could replace your cd player with it)
>s-video out
>component out
>progressive compatible component out

You were paying over $350 to get even one or 2 of these features. $600 was high by that time (that was more PS1 era pricing), but not unheard of.

>sold all of them back in the day in retail from ps1 thru mid ps2 life
>yes this is user content sourced, but consider it a refutation

Did it for space reasons for my CRT set-up. Recently thought I fucked up something because my disc drive stopped working, but it just randomly died for some reason. No clue but replaced it and works fine now.

PSone I bought from good will and had the CD drive busted. replaced that and works like a charm. Outside of an issue with the power jack. Only works at certain angles so I think I have to resolder some pieces back there when it does eventually god out.

I have heard from some people the disc drive ribbon cable might get caught in the reader and break but I dunno how true that is or possible given they have adhesives. So it might just eventually wear out and snap the cable.

Crazy how many people were brainwashing into believing that a DVD player cost $300, $400 even $500 in the early 2000. It was easy to find one for $100. even cheaper on the second hand market. The cheaper ones weren't as reliable as Panasonic or sony, but they did the job. by 2002 a new one already cost $60
