I bought a box of Atari 2600 apps but some of them act strange with my 7800 controllers (the only joypads I have). Particularly the apps from Activision.
Pitfall Harry just jiggles left and right and won't move and all I can do is make him jump straight up. Chopper Command the heli just goes up/right and won't stop.
Should I buy a 2600 joystake? Will it even work on my 7800?

Since nobody who knows about the 7800 is trying to help you yet, I, a person who only knows about the 2600, will tell you this: According to the Internet, 2600 controllers should work fine on the 7800. So yeah, I guess you should get one of those and see if it clears up your problem. I've no idea whether it will, but it's an easy low-hanging fruit to pick.

I am not really an 'App' person, I am more of a Tape kinda guy. My Favorite Atari tapes are Missile Command (a fine version), Kaboom!, Super Breakout with the paddle controllers, and POOOOOOOOOOLL POOOOSIIIIIITION!

hyperkin makes a decent 2600 stick scoop that instead of dice-rolling on antiques.
eventually you will of course have both
but for "play right now 100% working"
the 14$ stick is great, i use that one the most so i dont have to worry about breaking shit

A simple reverse image search shows that it is from a 2019 auction

in b4 OP trying to pretend
>I just google a pic to illustrate my text!
if that was the case he wouldn't have called the pic "my atari apps"

Regardless of the pic it was a 0/10 terrible bait, not even believeable, the pic is just the proof

People think they called apps because there application

NO

They call em apps because they are appetizer game, not entree game, not full course. Atari games are SMALL and unsatisfying, just a taste of video game

I first obtained this game with just the cart and no manual, I think in 1989 or 1990. I don't remember how long it took to discover the need to use the 2nd controller to move around, and to further discover you need to use the first controller to select items. I was resorting to falling into the bad doctor pits just so he would steal items until it reach the item I wanted to use.
