Japan also bough the GameCube as well as it outsold the Xbox there.

Nintendo were competing with Microsoft for the first time, so they wanted to avoid overspending, they were also wanting to avoid the software droughts that affected the N64 so they rushed their first party games. This was also when Yamauchi stepped back, Iwata took over and a lot of the long time developers like Miyamoto became executives with much less game input.

They should have increased the disc sizes, had more support for online and increased the memory from 24 MBs to 32 to compete with the PS2 and Xbox
