What are some /vr/ games everyone loves that you hate?

>Silent Hill 1 is a shitty horror game, and no - I didn't get filtered. I love RE1-3, Dino Crisis and Clock Tower 1, etc. there are few horror games I dislike on the PS1, but SH1 is a fucking mess in almost every aspect and the story is gay.

Silent Hill and Fatal Frame are the two series I keep coming back to, because they seem so cool and I want to be wrong about them, and then I have no fun at all.
I half get the idea that survival horror fans don't really play the games, and mostly like the idea of them. The games are stiff and awkward, and often have not very good combat design, but the ideas are cool.
How many people just watched a Let's Play or something, and then pretended?

Just wanted to say that I get what you're talking about when you mention let's plays, there are indeed horror games that require a lot of dedication due to their inaccessible nature or downright shitty gameplay like Rule of Rose or Siren but Fatal Frame is definitely not one of those imo

You're simply wrong because Silent Hill 1's sound design, art design, and atmosphere are all top-notch, and it has been recognized as such since release.
A foggy American town is almost always associated with Silent Hill in pop culture, even to people who have no intention of ever playing the games.

It's my favorite horror game ever made due to how carefully-made and detailed everything is. They put heart and soul into every facet of Silent Hill, and it shows.

I'm gonna have to agree with op somewhat here, if you want the "survival horror" experience, you best stick to RE series, silent hill is mechanically inferior, but it made up for it in psychological horror themes

Silent Hill is great for the experience. If you play for an experience in gameplay that rivals RE1 then you will be disappointed. If you binge the series you will also be disappointed by the sheer number of times you have to go to the same locations and do the same shit and the gameplay doesn't get much better.

I don't dislike the rest of the series, but the original is unplayable

I do not understand the appeal of Final Fantasy in the slightest. The gameplay is totally intolerable, as is the bog-standard western fantasy setting (when it isn't overdesigned to the point of incomprehensibility). What do millennials see in this nonsense? At least Dragon Quest is cartoony and funny.

Same. I pushed through 1 on the NES out of respect for vidya history and couldn't bring myself to play any of the other ones for more than 5 hours. I like Amano's artwork and Uematsu's music is top notch obviously but I just fucking can't man. This will sound like nonsense to someone who doesn't play JRPGs at all because they all look the same at first glance but Dragon Quest games are so much more engaging to actually play it's unreal

Silent Hill is its own game, if you go in expecting something else you might not be happy. If you play the whole series back-to-back you might be offput by having to go to the hospital etc.several times and the gameplay not drastically changing like other series.

You have to remember that anime wasn't as easily accessible or common in the west as it is now. Something like FFVII comes along with high quality cinematics and cool aesthetics and it's the best thing ever if all you can compare it to as a kid are games like Mario, western cartoons, or the rare anime like DBZ. Nothing about it was bog standard for the people who played it as their first RPG.

Final Fantasy VII. Way too easy and boring. The story is semi cool, so are some locations, but that is not enough for me to finish it, I tried playing it multiple times before giving up for good.

- The male characters are evil, psychopaths, etc.(included the main character).

- The female characters are the "victims of the society" or "the victims of men".

Also:

- The character fells slow in comparison with the one of silent hill 1.

- Both the pistol and the shotgun feel slow in comparison with the ones of silent hill 1.

- The enemy variety and boss variety feels small in comparison with the ones of the first silent hill.
