They dubbed it for some reason. The dub in my language is so awful it became something of a meme in our friends group back then.

Yeah same here. All the SNES god games basically - Populous, Utopia, SimAnt, SimCity, SimEarth. I never got hold of Civilization though. But that was fine because I actually did have that on PC (and I loved it). Also Lemmings, and I guess Ys III (although I only briefly played that on a rental because I didn't really understand the point of it).

aswell as the NES one, the master system port of Ultima 4 is surprisingly good. Especially if you play the Jp one with FM music.

Populous was one of the few games we had for the Sega MD at first. That soundtrack was ONE drum beating. Damn, that shit was monotone.
Sometime there was a crashing sound right before a big fight broke out.

Damn, I was like 10 yo when I played this shit.

Not good on a controller. Control schemes sure have come a long way. Otherwise the game seems great, I'll have to check it out on PC some other time.

The only impressive thing about Colony Wars is its graphics. Compared to Wing Commander Colony Wars has a much worse control mechanics where you need to constantly press on the accelerator like in a car to move and can't match your speed to your target with a simple button press. It doesn't even a target pointer for aiming your guns. Mission flow and immersion is vastly superior in Wing Commander. And comparing the story of Colony Wars to Wing Commander is just sad.

Nvm, decided to give xcom another go. The game seems fantastic. Won my first battle. Only lost 6 soldiers. Reloaded and now about to try again.

This game could absolutely work with a controller though, so I can't understand why they didn't even bother making use of half the buttons.

Unlike the awful port of WC3 they did a very good job porting WC4 including completely reworking the controls into something that works fine even with a digital gamepad and is easy to memorize. Wing Commander 4 is a very well made space combat sim created by people who know well how to make such kind of games. Colony Wars has convoluted mission design and weird controls mechanics. The only impressive aspect that it has is a very pretty graphics engine.

I played Pool of Radiance on NES because I didn't have a computer that could run it until 1993. After playing the original, I can say it wasn't that bad of a port.

Ones a sim and ones more arcadey. The only reason to compare the two is because they're space shooters but they're so different. Never played WC4 on ps1, had the 4 disc on pc and wc3 on psx. Interesting to hear that 4 had more intuitive controls

i was to write that i did that too, then i remebered that i first played it on super nintendo.
Finnished both versions, snes first, then ps1.

Very much liked the snes version, which is a decent and very playable port, actually written by carmack himself. It has all the music tracks from the pc version, which were good enough conversions to impress me.

After snes i played the PS1 version. It doesnt have the music, but instead has this weird, threatening sounding ambient noises, with ocassional monsters screaming, more or less loudly, depending how far they are. While the music on snes is great, and probably even greater on the PC version, which i never played, i think the ps1 ambient sounds add so much too the athmosphere, that i assume it to be the superior port over the PC, and most likely the definitive Version of Doom of all platforms.

Also on the ps1 port, its not only monsters screaming, but in some levels its more like them doing some sort of singing and humming that is layd about the overall ambient noises, not depending if there are monstrs nearby, but over the whole level. Very athmospheric and giving the surrounding world an additional complexity, hinting to some kind of story, without needing to tell one.

When I was a kid, I had neighbor kids who had Sega Genesis. The boy was the kind that starts smoking and drinking at 10yo, definitely not the kind your parents let you play with. So what do you think we played? Ironically, most of it was Populous and Theme Park. Though to be honest, I think he borrowed the console from someone, so the games weren't his

I never played the original Populous or Populous 2. Only Populous The Beggining.
What's the best version? Is there any definitive version? I wish more old games had remakes that kept the mechanics the same but improved on the interfaces.
