What is the correct way to play retro vidya and why is it on modified OG hardware with ROMs/flashcarts?

Because its far more calming and relaxing.
No distractions, its just you, no savestates, no alt+tab and you forget you were even playing the game, no bugs/glitches that take you out of the game and make you fiddle with every setting.

But for 3D platforms i want to upscale so I will use an emulator anyways...

Couldn't agree more but may I advise an upscaler for 3D games? That said N64 will always look like ass. Even the lower-end ones have profiles so once you set them, it's done!

Acceptable.

For the cores that support netplay, RetroArch is a superb choice with its rollback netcode.
Alternatively Fightcade, if you want to play with randoms.

No i meant i use emulators to upscale. So for N64 that would be any emulator that supports Parallel-RDP.

i got a DS Lite with what i think is an original R4 cartridge, but dont know wher the microsd for it is, i read it can only take some obsolete 'non-HC' version of a microsd chip that caps out at ~2gb
so it seems like more trouble getting one of those rather than just upgrading the cartridge entirely

basically, what's the best flashcart for a DS Lite?

i meant flashcarts. i bought ever single one there is to find on aliexpress and they all works basically the same, if you see R4 RTC, R4 SDHC R4 whatever, just ignore it, theyre all exactly the same
