So is bonk supposed to fly through the levels in a ball like samus with turbo or is that a happy accident

always wondered this, the minigames even seem to lead you to discovering it

Probably a happy accident they chose to leave in. The TV ad shows it.

It never even occurred to me that it wasn't intentional. Why wouldn't it be? Every TG16 controller had turbo so I sincerely doubt they somehow developed and tested a game where they never discovered what happens when you hold a button with turbo on, especially since there are only two fucking buttons.

Not to mention that emphasizing use of the built-in turbo on every controller (a feature unique to the TG16) would make sense for a game that was supposed to feature the console mascot. IIRC Bonk became the pack-in game for TG16s

Didn't the original controller like the one shown at the end of that video not have turbo yet?
Anonymous No.11951418 >>11951430
>>11951228
As far as I know the turbo sliders were a day one thing, at least for the north amercian version of the console. And Bonk came out right after the TG16 launched so I imagine it wasn't some surprise that caught them off guard. Maybe the really early version of the PC engine didn't have it but I seem to remember turbo became standard on it at some point as well, probably no later than the TG16's release.

So I still say there's no way they didn't know what would happen. You wouldn't develop a game for a system where every console came with with built-in turbo and have no idea what happened when people used it. They'd have to account for it just so it didn't produce some crazy unexpected result or glitch or something. Not to mention its use in the game doesn't feel at all like something they just overlooked, it's more like a core mechanic. It may have been a happy accident but it's one that happened very early in the development and was incorporated into the design.

The original base PC Engine released in Japan shipped with one non turbo controller. However, official turbo controllers were available day 1 and only cost 200 yen more than a standard controller so everybody who bought another controller had a turbo pad. Bonk's Adventure also released alongside the Coregrafx which included the turbo pad so Hudson did expect players to have use it.

I’ll try mashing the button. Maybe thats why I always thought this game was slow and boring.

Not an accident. One of the bonus levels requires you to "fly" across a large gap like that. They just didn't plan on players using a turbo controller to abuse it.

All Bonk games are mid. People argue about Mario vs Sonic, but nobody argues about Bonk vs either of them, and that's for a reason.

I'm choosing to retroactively exist in 1996, you can enjoy 1987 without the PCE to begin with

That's actually one of my favourite years in vidya alongside 1996, so yeah I will
Anonymous No.11954761
I was wondering why they'd reduce the flip rate starting with 2.

Because they realized how broken things were in the first game with the auto fire... turbofags ruined things for everyone else as usual and still have the gal to claim it's how it's intended to be played.

You're correct, in that I hadn't played it and it appears to be one of the better ones
Anonymous No.11955190
Yeah this was pretty good though I feel it's rather slow paced compared to the PC-E games. I liked how dying puts you back to a checkpoint for once which forces the player to get a little good especially against bosses. Fuck that one boss which flips the stage up side down though.

At this point I've played them except the GB mini game spin off, the arcade game and the GC remake (I'll get there) and I still think the first one is the best. I can't really put my finger on it but there is something about the first game that oozes soul that none of the others manage to replicate, the first one also has excellent pacing imo and a higher skill ceiling due to the head flips going as fast as you can possibly push the button before they slowed everything in the sequels to focus on side mechanics instead (come to think of it, it's kinda like Spyro and its sequels or Crash and its sequels).

You're not completely wrong. Because less people grew up with a Turbografx, less people have nostalgia for it, and less people feel compelled to play it. That said, a Bonk game did release on the SNES, and all the Turbografx Bonk games were available on the Wii VC. This, combined with emulation, means there's plenty of ways to play these games without needing the console. There's tons of games that originally didn't sell well back in the day that now have followings. Why isn't Bonk one of them?

Also, in general, the Bonk games simply did not review as well as Mario/Sonic did.

>There's tons of games that originally didn't sell well back in the day that now have followings.
That's because a lot of them were shilled by people, e.g. Earthbound
>There's tons of games that originally didn't sell well back in the day that now have followings. Why isn't Bonk one of them?
Probably because zoomies only play the popular stuff and maybe something that's a bit outside of that zone unless it's being shilled (look at how much sseeth's reviews influence which games people play)
How many SNES fans do you know who've played time trax, the adventure of hourai high, sutte hakun, wonder project j, the firemen etc.?
By your logic, plenty of great games are actually bad because they don't have a cult following - you're basically postulating something akin to a law where good games necessarily get a cult following years after their release
