Probably because zoomies only play the popular stuff and maybe something that's a bit outside of that zone unless it's being shilled (look at how much sseeth's reviews influence which games people play)
How many SNES fans do you know who've played time trax, the adventure of hourai high, sutte hakun, wonder project j, the firemen etc.?
By your logic, plenty of great games are actually bad because they don't have a cult following - you're basically postulating something akin to a law where good games necessarily get a cult following years after their release
