Sounds like most of Piko's releases. I was going through retro games on Steam that include a ROM, and 95% of them were from Piko, with half full of negative reviews on how poor the emulation is.

Piko is just a shitty company in general. I remember seeing them post in an Atariage thread about the legality of owning unreleased games and protos and they openly said that they would/will use litigation if collectors don't work with them. You can have opinions on collectors owning undumped shit but that's borderline mafia tactics right there.

I've always said the big problem with Bubsy is the physics. Compare him to Mario or Sonic; they're fast but controllable, but Bubsy's speed can go completely out of control and there are multiple parts of the game where you can get so much momentum you can skip entire chunks of the level by gliding.

This compilation appears to be published by Atari (current owners of Bubsy IP) who also own Digital Eclipse. The latter have previously used a custom version of DREAMM in their Tetris compilation for IBM PC emulation. However, given that this compilation is being developed by LRG, they probably don't want to use competitor's tech.

This. Like holy fuck. Pretty much the whole series consists of what are otherwise fine games with huge explorable levels, that are just marred by wonky mechanics that make them more annoying to play than they ought to be. It's absolutely an incredibly 'fixable' franchise, the very open and physically free platforming gives it a big edge over most other platformers of the time aside from the Marios and Sonics it was competing with, it just needed a good polish. I'd much rather play a 'fixed' Busby than 95% of the generic platformers that were coming out that were hardly trying in comparison.

>Bubsy is only hated because retards heard from an e-celeb that it's bad
So tired of this "This thing that is hated is only hated because a YouTube video told you so!"

No, he's hated because the games suck. I didn't need a YouTube video to tell me that, I didn't even watch any YouTube videos about Bubsy. I came to that conclusion myself when I tried replaying the games again as an adult. I used to think Bubsy 1 was great as a kid, an older relative had it and I would play it there often, but he hated it and I never understood why. I rented 2 and didn't like it as much.

Years later after emulators became a thing and I had internet I tried it again, and realized why my older relative hated it. Every 10 seconds it was "Oh yeah, I remember that, I always didn't like that part" until I realized I was essentially feeling that way about the entire game. I didn't realize how many flaws the game had as a kid but now they were standing out like a sore thumb. The game is not good, it has many issues, they can't even get jumping on things right. Or rather, I should say they can't even get jumping on things correct because right is exactly what happens, for some odd reason the game keeps making you veer to the right on most things you jump off of, this happens even on the very first thing you can jump off in the game, a tree branch. Not to mention the camera not being able to follow you, the one-hit deaths that result, the excessively long levels, the random times the game decides on fall damage or not (which is also one-hit), the many times there can be a death trap right off-screen below an area you are expected to jump down, and plenty of other issues. And that's just Bubsy 1!

I didn't need a YouTube video to tell me any of this, I didn't watch any YouTube videos about it, I experienced it myself both decades ago and more recently. I can come to my own conclusions, and the conclusion is that the games sucked. They are ONLY remembered now as a meme to be shat on.

Those games are for sure just emulated. They were likely able to get the code for the PSX game and it was in a high level language that would not take a mountain of work to recompile to run natively with some enhancements. But all the other games even if they could get their hands on the code would have been in assembly and specifically designed for the console's hardware, you can't really port that so much as re-write it entirely, especially for the insane mess that was the Jaguar's hardware.

Bubsy is only getting "love" because the series has become a meme, especially with the way Bubsy 3D ended up and killed the series, not to mention the original developer and publisher is also long dead. The IP is likely dirt cheap to get because of this since it's considered so worthless.

Is that the kind of "love" you want those other series to get?

Look at what happened with the attempt to give "love" to Commander Keen recently, or the last time Jazz Jackrabbit had a game. They even tried to give Bubsy some of that "love" with some newer games, those aren't even being acknowledged as existing anymore.

Also, more than Megaman ever will? What do you call Megaman 9, 10, and 11? Bubsy died early on the PS1 (with some recent games parading his corpse for meme material that were shit and instantly forgotten) Megaman was still going in the PS1 and PS2 era, and had a revival on the Wii and then again recently on modern systems and Steam. He ended up better than anyone else on that list, especially Bubsy.

It was Bubsy 3D and that god awful cartoon pilot that retroactively tainted the name.
The first game is fine. Not groundbreaking or anything, but it's fine. It's a decent platformer. Problem being that it (in itself a good thing) can get up to ridiculous speed, but Bubsy only has one hit point. You cannot see what's ahead but you die instantly.
They really needed a hit system a la Sonic, that would fix like 90% of its problems.
The other sidescrolling platformers are OK. THEN 3D came out and....

The games were bad. Ironically, Bubsy 3D is the most playable one out of the bunch, but got the most shit as it looked comically dated compared to contemporary releases, unlike Bubsy 1 and 2, which could fool you into thinking they are good games just because they have decent audiovisuals - and it obviously worked in your case.
Anonymous No.11952736

Bubsy doesn’t work because it wants to be Sonic but doesn’t understand why Sonic works. Sonic is designed to let you move fast. His jump and roll allows him to hit foes at all angles and the ring system lets you play somewhat recklessly. Bubsy has nothing like this. It tries to compensate by offering frequent checkpoints and extra lives but it’s frustrating because every time you start picking up speed you careen into something and die. I feel like this was an intentional design choice because the devs wanted you to see all the death animations.

Literally this entire goddamn post. All of the games are terrible or at the very least, obnoxiously mediocre. They all reek of Sonic the hedgehog clones, but with really vague explanations as the rules or the absolute bullshit of not scrolling the screen far enough to the right when Bubsy is moving so you can actually fucking see enemies with terrible hit boxes that you're about to run into. All the soundtracks suck, the sound effects are irritating and the synthesized dialogue is stupid. That dialogue also repeats itself A LOT. This is such a shill thread, it's obvious that someone is just drumming up attention for a long dead series. Promoting a "fixed" version of Bubsy 3D? What? Did they rebuild the game from scratch? As far as everyone knows, that game wasn't even finished before it was released. What could possibly be the point besides "muh consumerism" and convincing a bunch of idiots that they need to re-buy Bubsy games like they were actually secretly works of genius? L O L
