What the fuck happened here?
>OG FF Tactics is widely regarded as a masterpiece
>the translation has a couple minor issues but is overall regarded as very solid
>remake the game
>rather than just clean up spelling/grammar errors and minor clarity/mistranslation issues, they completely rewrote the entire script
>new script takes massive creative liberties and largely ignores the original Japanese
>has some pretentious, flowery, faux-Shakespeare garbage for every single character, even bandits and peasants, that sounds like it was written by high-school drama students
>also completely butcher the sound effects and music
>also completely butcher the pixel art
>also have massive slowdown for spells that makes them run at like half speed
>also totally removes the spell chants
>but if you ask anywhere online, reddit, resetera, etc. they will universally tell you WotL is somehow the definitive and to ignore the original
What the actual fuck? Is this some kind of psy-op or are people just this willfully ignorant?

Japanese can't write for shit. The original is very dry. You need a Woolsey-esque localizer to come in and punch it up.

Unfortunately we're going in the wrong direction nowadays. Some translators even leave the script in a state of incomprehensible Japlish by leaving all the "kuns" and "chans" and other honorifics in the script. No wonder people think JRPGS are cringe.

so, this speech pattern didn't exist for the Japanese, but for english, the regular cast is speaking in the flavour of an older English than modern. But Zalera and Altima and the others are given to speak an even older English than that to try and exacerbate their sense of being ancient or foundational.

No such flavoring exists in the Japanese (even though its definitely a language that could support such a thing). Zalera is just speaking straight form and a bit informal by comparison.

Thinking of ordering a cheap chipped psx. Could I just patch the psx version w a hack that includes the extra content of WotL (lol makes me think of wrath) and then burn it to a disc to run off the modded psx?
Also if I can do that wondering if I can burn the Mizzirna falls to a disc and play it from the chipped PlayStation.

I took Middle English in college… I honestly can’t tell if you’re shitting me or not but I feel like I could translate that. The problem is reading that would get old fast. I’m a fast reader but you can’t do that w English like that. You have to slow down and replay it over and over and who the fuck wants to do that. However I still do not remember it being that detracting in 2009 when I beat the psp version (I think I beat ff tactics in like 2000-2003, my brother loved it and I wanted to bond over it so forced myself to play it and the story, for me, is brilliant and people whine about it but really the first few seasons of game of thrones apped its style quite well) and yes I don’t remember it being quite that bad. I could be totally wrong I really need to go replay them. Thanks for listening anons. I’d still love to be able to play those versions I mentioned above on real hardware so I’m still wondering if it’s possible to burn the games onto cd w the hacks applied.

'Tis not unbearable, nay, 'tis most delightful! It doth render the matter far more engaging. Dost thou know how many virtual plays possess a script most dry and plain? Verily, 99.99% of all virtual plays ever quilled. And how many boast a script adorned with florid verse? Perchance a mere ten. The purple prose doth make each line a joy to peruse, so long as thou art skilled in the art of reading.

Alas, thou dost disdain the florid verse, for thy wit, being of low measure, doth falter in the tongue of England. Perchance, thou shouldst sport the game in Spanish, as do the other fecal skin dwellers of lesser realms.

Weep yet more to the overseers and proclaim thy grievances, as expected from a mewling sodomite such as thee. The truth, and the archive, still yet remains.

Some reddit millennial has a completed inflated sense of his own intelligence and overwrites everything in a vain attempt to turn muh video game into muh art. It's pretty simple: both translations of FFT are bad.

The PSX version is simple and has more hard-hitting lines, but also routinely degenerates into nonsense.

The PSP version generally makes more sense, but confuses flowery writing with good writing and loses a lot of the good parts of the PSX version.

Neither are actually good. Supposedly Squeenix is trying again with the remaster in Arranged mode, but knowing Squeenix it'll just be a third variety of shitty translation. FFT might just be cursed.

>why 2 remakes?
Because the first remake was for the PSP and every PSP remakes is sealed there forever.

Do we even know what the new remake's script even looks like? I don't doubt that the original English script was half-assed and the PSP one went nuts with the "Tis a medieval setting m'lord", but I also HIGHLY doubt the new one is going to change anything to the point of it being "ruined".

Since the other mode is literally just the ROM of the PSX version, do you think they'll just leave that one be and have the OG translation in it?

The writing and story was never good and always overrated. The advance games were also superior gameplay wise.

The class restrictions made cross classing fucking awful, aside from a few busted examples.

I haven't played this game but almost every "serious" medieval fantasy in the west is written like this. In fact this is pretty tame compared to some other stuff out there. Its fine if you think the translation is too liberal but these specific complaints come off as very "my only engagement with fantasy is through FF"
I can't even joke about gamers being illiterate because this shit is pretty common in vidya too

the combinations present fucking sucked but whatever you say, anon. We all know every moogle you brought used throw and every fighter regardless of race used whatever class gave them a ranged melee attack ability like air render. Oh and steal ability was a treat, especially since only two races got access to it in any way, same with steal weapon. Most of the fun with job systems with cross class abilities is experimenting to find fun combinations.

Its mostly because the original script was serviceable (though flawed) in a lot of ways, but it had more direct impact due to being the conversations soldiers have on the battlefield. Its just unnecessarily verbose when people are cutting each other down and incinerating each other. The game was designed to play out both like a play and a story being recounted by a historian, but gameplay wise its a terrible change when there was a script that was more punchy and raw. People who experienced WotL first just see the old script as a jumbled mess, but it was a lot more visceral by comparison and many people prefer that. Especially when its what they had first.

I had the same reaction. Was going to play this version and I couldn't even make it through the first dialogue sequence without cringing and shutting the game off. The type of English they use is by no means Shakespearean, it's just tryhard theater kid shit. The PSX version is way more natural, and it doesn't have the uneven pixel scaling as you said.
