>Started Electronic Arts and was responsible for the 3DO
Why does nobody remember Trip Hawkins?

He is immortalized in Might and Magic VI as an evil goblin he really is.

3DO was a mega-flop, and EA is one of the most despised and sleazy companies in gaming.

He doesn't even have heel heat
People hate Bobby Kotick but they know who he is
Nobody knows Trip

I might be misremembering, but I think some of the Ultima games had some jabs at Hawkins/EA too.

Same reason why nobody remembers Dennis Ritchie despite being the father of the C programming language.

Yes, Hawkins is a dead pirate everybody hates in Ultima 6, and in Ultima 7 the main villain uses three generators which are shaped like a cube, a sphere and a tetrahedron, which is a reference to the first Electronic Arts logo.

Talking about Trip Hawkins objectively is a bit difficult as he appears to be a very charismatic person in real life, so the popular narrative about him is deliberately constructed by the man himself to paint him in the best light. He is not dissimilar to Steve Jobs in that way.

>I should mention in passing that 3DO has been one of your largest advertisers. Effective immediately, we are going to have to cut that back...In conclusion, I think you owe us one because you took us by surprise and threw our review to a wolf. And you accepted his word as God without even checking in with a major advertiser...

I like when he tried blackmailing GamePro and they responded by releasing his email publically.

Amazing that there was a time when gaming journalists weren't the scum of the earth.

you're mistaken. they've always been scum. basically what trip did was common practice within the game industry.

> magazine gets free software
> they write review
> game distributor/developer pay you for advertising space
> cycle of life continues..

upset that cycle, say if game studio/distributor does not like review for whatever reason, they'll cease paying for advertising, stop sending you new software etc. think of it this way, this would have been one email out of hundreds sent to magazines over the decades, threatening them with the same things.

They used to make great games. You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

This is less blackmail than just overtly pointing out the inherent conflict of interest a gaming magazine has when they take ad revenue from companies whose products they also "review." It's a favors for favors situation and both sides know it and implicitly agree to it. He's just pointing out that he doesn't have to keep paying them to be shills if they're not going to do any shilling, which is correct.

Gamepro just called his bluff because they knew the 3DO was going to fail. If Nintendo sent them a similar letter they apologize profusely and no one ever hears about it

To be fair, Trip left EA to establish The 3DO Company, years and years before EA became the devil (with John Ravioli)

Because Kotick bullshittery is more recent than Hawkins fuckery. A lot of people now are angry at Activision being a rape house recently, where as only bitter Ultimabros are angry at something EA did 33 years ago.

>At this point, Electronic Arts was a computer software company which did not want to deal with Nintendo's strict licensing policies. He saw his opportunity when Sega released the Genesis. Not wanting to pay licensing fees, he hired a team to reverse engineer the system for his company to make unlicensed games on it. Hawkins eventually revealed his intentions to Sega, while offering a partnership to combat Nintendo telling them, "You can sue, but we did the tech fair and square and have great lawyers. So make us an official licensee. And give us a reduced rate." Sega, anticipating that Hawkins would sell his research to other third-party companies, agreed and made them a partner
Kek, what a magnificent bastard. Things were really ruthless in the early days

if a magazine keeps over-rating shit games they'll come to be seen as unstrustful very soon and lose readers, so it's obviously not that simple
