>hard drive is tied to the motherboard so you can't just swap it out unless you have a modchip or backed up the eeprom and use chimp
>also can't play discs or boot into the dashboard if the hard drive is broken
Between the leaky capacitor, shit disc drives, and ancient IDE hard drives all taking a shit, these things are going extinct. My friend gave me 2 xbox consoles, 1 won't boot into the dashboard and cycles between different error codes for both the disc drive and hard drive, and the other is soft modded so it can play games from the hard drive but the disc drive doesn't read discs at all

the soft modded xbox plays games just fine, the disc drive doesnโ€™t read discs but itโ€™s not โ€œbrokenโ€ enough that it actively prevents the xbox from getting to the dashboard with error code 11 like the other one.
the erroring xbox needs a new disc drive and hard drive before it can do anything. i see modchips and certain bios can skip the disc drive check altogether so ill probably get one of those and a new hard drive for it.

Luckily all those problems are fixable. Better to have peripheral devices like the DVD drive or HDD die than have chips that are dying. TSOP flashes are permanent fixes to this stuff anyway.

Clock capacitor disasters are still a mess, but fixable with some good soldering.

No need for a modchip to softmod a broken Xbox, get yourself one of these adapters and an appropriate ROM reader so you can dump the HDD key even from an Xbox that has no hard drive at all.
Then you can just use FatXplorer to create a new hard drive on your PC using the HDD key you just dumped and shove that drive into the Xbox.
Just did this a few weeks back on a 1.6 version Xbox I'd had hanging around with no HDD for years. Couldn't be arsed to hardmod since being a 1.6 it'd need an LPC rebuild as well.
The only hard part of softmodding this way is knowing exactly what files you need to put on the HDD.

It's more than just the clock capacitor. The GPU/CPU caps are known to burst too on most motherboards. And the traces rot on some front control panels that makes it impossible to start the console.

Yeah I spent $500 CAD last year to get an Xbox that had every cap replaced and the disc drive had a lot of work done on it too. Guy has checked on me twice since then to make sure everything is still good. Anyways, I took the lazy route but the point is that all of your problems can be fixed.

You could also unplug the drive while the system is running to get it un an unlocked state. The drive isn't encrypted, it's just using a feature some IDE drives had where you could set a password in their firmware. You have to enter the password to unlock the drive, which fully unlocks the drive and leaves it that say until you lock it again.

The xbox would unlock the drive on poweron and re-lock it on shutdown or even in the event of a power loss (it had a capacitor that stored enough power to send the lock command on power loss) but there was nothing they could do if you let disconnect the drive while the system is running and thus have it unlocked.

The worst part is that most people who own these know nothing about the clock capacitor issue, and how urgent it is to remove the clock capacitor to prevent it from killing the motherboard.
Anyway, try swapping the disc drive from the unmodded console into the softmodded console. Disc drives aren't tied to specific boards the way hard drives are.

This is why i heavily recommend modchipping OG Xboxes now. A custom bios gives your Xbox far more brickproofing by disabling all these shitty lockouts and lets you use your Xbox without a disc drive or even boot it without a hard drive to fix it. Plus being able to just throw any hard drive at a modchipped Xbox instead of dealing with passwords and the whole CHIMP process is honestly far more convenient in the long run.
It's like installing Gentoo on your hueg. Risky, but gives you complete control over your system.

Surprisingly those shit thompson drives have been pretty reliable after a good clean. Pic rel is how filthy a laser to one of them was, still worked like a champ

HDDs are a different story, I've heard of HDDs from 2003 that still work but it is a BITCH using a raspberry pi to get the required stuff for a new drive. The best thing to do is add custom firmware and get the eeprom from a USB drive/thumb drive.

Also the 1.6 revs don't have leaky clock caps, I have seen the 5 caps near the psu plug go bad near the psu plug on some 1.6s but its really random at this point.
