Dragon Quest 6
Why does nobody ever talk about this particular dorakue?

Because it wasn't made by the same people who developed the first five games and had a bloated "quantity over quality" approach. The same people who made DQ6 also went on to the absurd marathon that was DQ7 before going bankrupt.

Cuz your options are the unfinished translation glitched up the ass version or the non retro version that's inferior to the og in every single way.
The game is known by many to be the black sheep of the franchise due to how little clues the game gives you to move forward also lots of people have grips with Nevan and Amos being literally who's joining your party.
Got the NDS version back in the day and I liked it, not the best NDS DQ (neither the best SFC DQ) but still had fun with it, Nevan is like if the wagon guy from DQ4 joined your party, like there's not a single reason for him to be a permanent party member, also you can only recruit Lyzzie and Slimes into your party which is kind of lame.
Anonymous No.11955651
>>11955645
In the og besides Lyzzie you could recruit like 16 different type of monsters.

DQ8 spent the whole game focusing on chasing after the stolen magic staff, which is more consistent than how DQ7 was just totally-random adventures with no rhyme or reason.

I liked it, had some really cool stuff but at the same time I understand that the formula was wearing thin at this point. Seems to have sold well enough in Japan too, unlike the previous two games characters from this one don't seem to have made much of a lasting impression on people though, for that I at least partly blame the transition to Toriyama's late Buu saga dogshit artstyle which is very noticeable.

Because it's average, somewhat tedious. Too many maps, the overworld map, the underwater world map, the dream world map, jesus fucking christ.
Terry is pretty cool. The first encounter with him when he's dragging an empty coffin is top 5 most memorable dorakue moments.

I dislike DQs where you get a pre-made party. DQ3 will always be the best in that regard. Even though 6 has a job system, you never visually see any difference in your characters. That's why FF5's job system was better. Put simply, DQ6 was just overshadowed by better games.

Heartbeat never went bankrupt. They were poised to be the designated DQ developer until Horii passed over them and went with Level 5 for DQ8 since they were accustomed to 3D development while Heartbeat wasn't, causing them to closes offices afterwards.
Also Horii is the one who dictates the amount of content DQ games have. He was the one who wanted DQ7 to be as long as it was after seeing how much additional space they were allowed to work with. All the developers do is carry out his vision.

I'm a JRPG noob and even though I fucking love DQ3 I still prefer the pre-made party ones. I'm just too much of a brainlet for stuff like Final Fantasy 1, the only reason I was able to beat that one was because of 3 Fighters + 1 Red Mage and tons of grinding. That's also why I prefer Phantasy Star 1 to FF1

It's about 95% done and the remaining 5% are mostly flavour NPC text if you go through the effort in backtracking to previous areas later in the game

I don't think people complaining about the translation actually played it. They probably just need to cope for playing the objectively inferior DS version.

The same thing as every DQ "localization" since 8: everything is some kind of shitty pun or childish wordplay. One example for DQ6 is a major Priest character in a town focused on sleep and dreams named (ugh) "Pastor Bedtyme".

There is literally less content when it comes to the monster catching (the DS version only allows the Slime family line).
Also the DS grousp Skills and Spells together into one giant "Spell" menu which is retarded on several levels, like if you played that version first you wouldn't even know what you can and can't use when you're muted (said menu is also dynamic and the placement of your spells and skills differ depending on what you've learnt, meaning you never know where anything is).

I do love the DQ2 cast, but I also love the cast of DQ7 (and 11, but that's not retro). I never really got into 8's cast since most of the game is about Trode calling the shots and you're just the grunts fighting his battles. You don't even get to know anything about the main Hero until the post-game.

I think I've found playing the localizations as a britfag to be entirely tolerable, as a lot of it is colloquialisms and slang only used here. DQIV's weren't the best - Alena/Meena and Maya's Russian-y dialect just comes off as bad translation and the game forgets about Torneko's areas being Irish. I can understand the Scots being unreadable unless you're used to the dialect or a Limmy fan. Really didn't kill the game for me and it's my 3rd favourite next to III and V.

DQ is not a deadly serious, angsty and emotional time. It's predictable to a tee, and it reflecting a Toriyama manga in tone works for it.

dq6 is the first dq that feels just "ok".
the whole parallel world thing wasn't a new concept by this point.
instead of standing out by introducing something groundbreaking to the genre, dq6 itself has to compete with other jarpigs.

Most the normal names are the same. Amos and Terry, and then Milly, which I count as an anglicized version of Milayou and not as a separate name altogether.

The names that were changed all had some type of significance in the game. Barbara means "foreigner", Chamoro is a race of people that the character happens to look like (they're also catholics), Hasan means something like pretty boy and is an obviously foreign name (and his skin was also darker in the original artwork for some reason). Their names were changed to also have significance in English. Ashlynn, because her home town was set on fire, Nevan is either Welsh or Irish for saint, and Carver because he is a carpenter.

There's also a pattern with the monster names. When the monster has a normal Japanese name, it is usually translated literally in English. But many monsters, maybe as many as half, have English names. This has an exotic quality in Japanese, but it isn't captured in English if you just translate green worm as green worm. So they chose to give the monsters with English names puns to separate them from the "ordinary" monsters with Japanese -> English names.
Anonymous No.11974085 >>11974163 >>11974285
Also, the names come from Square Enix. They have an English guy and Yuji signs off on all of it, then they take it to the localizers. People don't like that, they want to blame the distributors or the localizers, but the Japanese headquarters at Square Enix are a lot more involved than most people think.
