Is it supposed to be mid?
>slow movement
>flat level design
>slow combat
>neither good as platformer nor shooter
I thought this was supposed to be one of Playstation's "greats"? I never see this series talked about here, now I understand why. This series has no fans except for furries. I don't even know who buys these games, though every one of them was on Platinum

That's every Playstation platformer. Play Super Mario Sunshine if you want a game with depth.

I already 100%ed it and I think it's the best platformer ever.
For years I've heard how Sunshine was some "black sheep", that Mario 64 was totally bad and that Jak / Ratchet were totally cool. I've also seen one guy on /vr/ claim later Ratchet games ruined things with strafing, and most said they were shooters anyway.
So why not go with a tried classic like Ratchet 1, right? And hoo boy. I mean, it's a big progress from PS1, but that's not saying much. This, apparently, is supposed to be far superior to Nintendo games for babies. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'd rather play Crash and Spyro on PS1 or this. It's just the most average experience one can have.
I can only hope later Ratchet games actually got better movement or better shooting, because this game is neither.

Wrong opinions like this is why the series turned into a lock strafe bullet sponge shooter.
Probably not enough flashy particle effects in the first game to stimulate your brain

I 100%ed both. Sunshine can be hard, but it's the most freedom you will get in any platformer, basically SM64 on steroids. Galaxy is really accessible and fun at first, but I'm still torn on if it's great or a shit stain on the series. It's more like 2.5D and a huge step back for 3D Mario, and it paved the way for 3D Land and 3D World.

I love all of Naughty Dog and Insomniac's PS1 games but both J&D and R&C just don't 'click' for me. At least Ratchet had the cool music and environments like you'd expect from Insomniac, and the art deco/classic sci-fi stuff the first game in particular has going on is awesome, but then the music is fuckin mono and compressed to where it sounds like it's coming from a tin can. Still, I can appreciate it does its own thing, and it's actually a pretty funny game when it wants to be.

Jak 1 just feels like "Crash but worse" with a world that seems cool and open but really is still just hallways, movement and controls are almost exactly "Crash 3 but with more stretchy animation when spinning and jumping," and Daxter is so fucking annoying I didn't even play the rest of the series.

I'd just like to remind everyone that /vr/ has roughly 2500 posts a day and its traffic cuts down by 30% around midnight Burger time. The prospect of this board being regurgitated low quality garbage threads by 90% regulars and 10% bots is very grim.

Only Jak was a first-party game at this time (and only just).
You're neglecting various first-party titles like the Team Ico games.
If you instead meant to say: "All Sony-PUBLISHED games except Ape Escape are average at best", then you're out of your mind.

Ape Escape is easily one of their worst first party games. Absolutely dogshit camera and gay easter egg hunt gameplay so boring and braindead that you'd have to be a toddler to find it entertaining.

You just have shit taste.

Ok, maybe I was too quick to judge this game guys, I'm sorry. I looked up some let's plays, and I think it gets better. You just start without anything cool and need to buy cool guns and abilities, there are also cool tasks and a lot more exploration to levels than I thought at first. All in all it gets better, just the start is very barebones and gives bad impression.
No hard feelings

Though to add it's really hardly a platformer so far, more like "3D action". I guess my expectation was that it was more like a platformer and that it had lock on

>engaging story
>solid humor
>great graphics, animations, and lots of attention to detail
>genuinely funny even for adults
>huge variety of planets and environments
>non-linear level design with tons of secrets
>good amount of side content
>nice blend of combat, platforming, and puzzles
>huge arsenal of unique weapons that all have their own niche
>combat is actually challenging and rewards good positioning and weaving in and out between enemies instead of just mindlessly strafing back and forth
I don't know how anyone could hate it. It was one of my favorite series growing up, and I've replayed them recently and they hold up very well. Just a really solid action game that feels like an epic journey across the galaxy.

I like 2 and 3 almost just as much, and they are better in many ways, but I feel like a lot of the nuance of the combat was lost in the transition to strafing gameplay, so they had to compensate with flashy over-the-top weapons and excessive RPG grinding systems.

I've seen that guy too and he's a fucking retard. RaC 1 is a very weak start, but 2, 3, and Gladiator are fantastic games. The first few PS3 games are ok too but they kind of fell off.

Arcadey TPS is a surprisingly underserved genre (RE4 clones don't count). The only other game I've found that scratches a similar itch to R&C is Returnal, or retro FPS.

Don't get me wrong, but the first impression was bad. The controls are ok but have clear flaws. No lock on button, when there's automatic lock on it doesn't work half the time. L1 either slowly changes the camera angle, or if you're facing the opposite way it snaps immediately. The movement is just so slow, I did like 10 missions and it's still so slow with no option to boost it. If you attack with your wrench and then press Circle, you don't start shooting immediately, you first pull out a weapon. And so on.
With these controls, camera and movement, I'm legit surprised it's as good as it is. Generally to me it's a hallmark of a bad game. Also it seems the game is all about finding cool new weapons and abilities in a Metroid-esque fashion, so in the beginning when you have none it's pretty damn tame

You'll learn the mechanics as you play. Everything works fine, you're simply mistaking your lack of proficiency with a flaw in design. Like criticizing 2d mario for not having a perfect mid air stop. That's the point of the game, balancing momentum with platforming. The point of ratchet is understanding how and when to use what weapons.

Why are zoomers like this? Everything you just described is completely intentional. Why is your generation so allergic to weight and commitment? It's like you just want everything to be Celeste or something.

I don't think the Dark Souls generation is allergic to weight and commitment. I do think though that they usually allow it and other kinds of bullshit in souls-likes while complaining about the same thing in other genres.

It's like they cannot possibly conceive of anything that deviates from speedy, flip on a dime movement. And that anything else is a completely unconscious mistake on the developers part.

i replayed the ps2 ratchets recently on pcsx2 and I cranked the game speed up to 150%, i've played them so much as a kid that they feel too easy on regular speed. Was a lot of fun, its nice that ps2 emulation and computer CPU's have improved so much that you can do that now

Dude is trying to correct an error and you're criticizing that. The problem isn't the use of YouTube as a reference to help a person learn why a game should not have been abandoned so early. It's that the game was abandoned so early, or at least, that the person who abandoned it early then popped onto social media to pretentiously trashtalk it in front of its fans despite not having properly given it a try. (I say "pretentiously" because that's how that awful wordlet "mid" always sounds to me.)

>Why do you prefer snappy, responsive controls to slow, unresponsive ones??
Gee I wonder
Anyway I get your point dude, I can understand sometimes slow controls serve purpose. Except I want my camera to be fast, period. If I can't see where I'm shooting , it's not "depth". If tapping L1 to center the camera is less reliable than just manually adjusting it, it's not "depth". Centering the camera should be fast, and entering the 1st person mode should be fast too. Somehow Tomb Raider, OoT and GTA3 got this right. You wouldn't know these btw, these are zoomer games like Celeste.
Oh and for fuck's sake, Ratchet could really walk a little faster.
