What's the best version of RE? I heard the American original version is the worst because it's impossible to beat

The US original release is the best release because it is the hardest of all versions.
>Jill and Chris take 1.5x as much damage from all sources
>enemies have 1.5x as much health
>Hunters can instakill you at yellow-fine health if they feel like it
>less ammo all around
>only 2 ink ribbons per pickup instead of 3
It's called the "longbox" version but the game version was released more commonly as a standard size CD case. Just don't get any greatest hits or dualshock release and you should have the proper version.

the reason its so hard is because Japanese developers were furious over American game rentals and made our versions more difficult to force us to get stuck and buy them

I hate hunters though

I like Hunters specifically because they forced me to reset RE1 from the beginning as a kid. I had used up all my good ammo by that point thinking the mansion was cleared of zombies, only to be instakilled by Hunters all the time with nothing to fight back with but handgun bullets.

I finally *got* the puzzle of "survival horror."

PC with classic REbirth patch

I wanted to play this but could not get the OG RE to install properly on modern Windows. Maybe I wasn't supposed to download the JP archive like I did with RE 2 & 3 to play REbirth for those.

You forgot to mention auto-aim was completely removed from the original US version too
Also, the US Saturn version has this harder difficulty too
The PS1 version should still be played first since it's the original, but the Saturn version is worth checking out afterwards for it's exclusive content

You get enough ammo to kill everything three times over instead of five times.
This game is intimidating until you learn how to play it, then it's too easy.
I would recommend you try to extend the "intimidating" part as much as you can and play the slightly harder version.
But then again, it really isn't that much harder.

This one is an interesting novelty but shouldn't be the first way you play the game, especially with the new mode

DS.
You have 180 degree turn.
Knife is on a button and doesn't take inventory space.
Map on the other screen shown at all times and you can check your health there.
Classic mode and rebirth to spice your second playthrough.
Can skip door opening.
Can pinch Jill ass.

It's funny how I've played pretty much only the US original release since childhood so I automatically assume auto-aim was something they "invented" for RE2.

Don't forget tactical reload

>>11959128
Oh yeah that one too.
I like they added a few puzzles in rebirth too. Its kinda fun to figure out the jewel ones.
Having different enemies in the same room also adds to the tension.
I dont like the first person segments though.

Yeah you adapt no no autoaim pretty quickly and the biggest difference you'll notice is Hunters taking 4 shotgun shells/2 magnum rounds instead of 3/1.

me either, they completely kill the mood

Feel sorry for players who combined all their herbs and have no sole green herbs when the Hunters pop up and having to risk an instant head rip at all times.

>the reason its so hard is because Japanese developers were furious over American game rentals and made our versions more difficult to force us to get stuck and buy them
Not exactly. The decision was made by Capcom's American staff, not the Japanese devs. The Americans requested that it be made more difficult during the localization process (i.e. after game development was largely completed). They knew that us rental Chads would complete it in a single weekend otherwise.

Me and my buddy still powered through it on a single weekend in the sweltering hot summer of 1996. The only hangup was figuring out you had to turn the books a specific way to open them to get the medals.
