inb4 that one faggot comes in claiming PCE shooters are only for EOPs and that the genesis and snes all had the same number of shooters (genesis had half and snes had a quarter)

Personally I prefer the Genesis library over the PCE but it is very close and I accept that PCE is usually the preferred option. SNES has an okay library but that is mostly on Konami's back and Fastrom patches help out some games that were previously laggy. SNES is the the 2P winner of 4th gen, Genesis and PCE lack in that category.
Honestly, I prefer 5th gen for shmups, a large part due to 2P being standard practice instead of an outlier.

I think arcades are the best for shooting games. With unique hardware that developers maximize, they would be the best machines to play. I would also say PCs has a lot of good options for shooting games too. While I do like the ones on Dreamcast, it is not better than the Saturn in my opinion.

I like it. The visuals are a bit bland and doesn't appear to push the hardware anywhere even close to its limits, but it is pretty solid nonetheless. I blind preordered the game since I had quit videogames already, but still wanted a last hurrah with the Dreamcast, and I was pleasantly surprised how smooth the game felt in play.

Saturn is by far the best. PC Engine is next, and the best of it’s generation. Then maybe Dreamcast. PSX is the surprising one with a lot of good shmups, and it shares plenty of multiplats with the Saturn.

If you go back far enough the best shmup system was always just the newest system. River Raid was great on Atari at the time. In it’s day the NES was actually pretty good, and was capable of smooth scrolling compared to MSX. It got beat by Master System which was then beat by PCE. SNES and Genesis were pretty even, both had good libraries.

Then Nintendo essentially quit shmups and Sega doubled down on Saturn and made the best library of any console. PSX was the middle ground, with exclusives worth playing.

I don’t like Dreamcasts d-pad for much of anything. Saturn’s is perfect for shmups.

Border Down is great. Ikaruga, Border Down, Mars Matrix, Zero Gunner, Gunbird 2, Giga Wings are all good and that’s not even going into the fully post-mortem releases.

Saturn does indeed have a very impressive catalog of shmups. DC comes close, but I'm feeling more drawn to the former.
