Maybe they were intentionally setting up a front lit gba for users to double dip on

i did not own a single blue or white LED in 2001-06 so i did not expect anything to come with a light.

i got this shit. not my pic. mine was never that grimy

i skipped SP because it couldn't do stereo and charging at the same time without third party cables i wasn't aware of and the one i already had worked well enough

That has a fluorescent tube because white LEDs did not exist, so six (6) AA cells last 4-6 hours.

They could have front lit this thing in 2001. It was cheaper because they didn't and nintendo hadn't had any real competition in the handheld market at this point

you could easy design a clip-on led strip that is much less intrusive than the huge gba light attachment. just have is sit right on top at an angle and itd probably work really well and use very little battery life.

It's a console made for playing outdoors. There's this thing out there called the sun, no need for backlight.

I was there at the time and it still seemed ridiculous. I had a standard GBA for about 3 days because I liked the form factor and then ended up taking it back to the store and paying the extra for a SP. Never looked back. No backlight was always bad. I always disliked it.

>What is Nintendo's problem?
"The users are unwashed masses, it is our duty to educate them for we know better than anyone else and can do no mistake" is Nintendo's entire mindset in a nutshell.

>What is Nintendo's problem?
To paraphrase Gunpei Yokoi's own words, "lateral thinking with withered technology." Nintendo knows how to take outdated technology and turn a profit with it. This has been their strategy with handheld consoles since the beginning, and it's been one hell of a successful strategy for them.
But yes, the lack of a backlight on the original GBA was a frustrating design decision. If they kept the GBC going a little longer while they waited for white LED prices to drop, I think things could've worked out alright.

the thing about the lack of backlight isn't just the issues with visibility but it inevitably making every game on the system look dingy, like colors only serve a practical purpose in distinguishing sprites, in terms of visual appeal the games might as well be monochrome.

And if it had a backlit screen you would be complaining about battery life being so short. The reason the SP had it and a rechargable battery is because both became viable for a handheld, cheaper batteries and more efficient lighting. Fuck this zoomer tier zoom zoom nonsense thread.

If Sega would released their Super Game Boy equivalent for the Game Gear instead of the Nomad and the MegaJet, not released those weird Genesis models like the one that looked like a compact disc and the WonderMega and ditched the 32X they would it done alright.

"Why didn't it have a backlit screen and more buttons and stereo speakers and a Bluetooth! Where is my Youtube shorts dedicated button and my Roblox port!"

Fucking retards, this is why I stopped browsing /vr/ last time, because children seem to think that all technology in the past should live up to horrible, modern standards. The GBA was a revolutionary console with an amazing library and was sold at a cost that even poor families could afford hardware, games and batteries. The hardware is well designed and durable enough that it survived even mistreatment and neglect to this day. It was a revolutionary product, but try telling that to the brainless twenty year old phone posters that infest the modern internet.

I feel like the views on here are pretty balanced. Some people think stuff like no backlit is dated while some think it was fine. Of course there are always going to be SOME people who disagree with you. It would be boring if it was an echo chamber.

i have both actually.
and 2 micros too.
and 2 modded regular gba.
i had a backlit sp but it got stolen, after that i unknowingly bought a frontlit sp because i didn't even knew those existed.
so, i experienced both sp's growing up. both had their advantages and drawbacks. the frontlit looks amazing under the sun, but the backlit needs to be set to high brightness and still doesn't look as good as the frontlit under sunlight.

Nta, but true. There's a little bit of everything here, that keeps it interesting. It also makes it hard to have certain threads, but I think that's an acceptable trade off.

I understand that completely, but having to hear people echo what I imagine their favorite youtubers say instead of maybe looking into the history of the GBA for example, is a bit frustrating. Maybe it is just me however, heaven knows I have been asked things such as "Why did you play a GBA instead of on your phone when you were a kid?" and "Were you an Android or Iphone kid?" and it triggers my autism. Things like debating if the GBA would have been better with a front or backlit screen, or extra buttons or stereo speakers versus the cost in modifying the mainboard, casing and other things is interesting to consider, as is wondering how those changes would effect battery drain and cost of AAs.

>But why didn't they just microwave burritos during the Civil War??????
This. The Game Gear used 6 Batteries and had a 5 hour battery life max. Nintendo put a backlit screen on the SP because energy efficient LED's were now either feasible or existed.

Does the gba micro have a better looking screen than the original ds? I think the og ds looks absolutely horrible. Also have a regular front lit sp from back in the day and I hate the way that looks. Just wondering if the updated sp and micro actually had decent displays
Anonymous No.11964402
>>11963975
I think it looks very good, way better than the original DS, but a lot of that is simply due to the high pixel count per square inch. Same reason that a small HD screen can look so good compared to something bigger- it's not necessarily higher quality but it's perceived as such due to sheer density.

As a kid I hated the GBA because of the screen. It's just downright uncomfortable to try playing on this thing and I still despite it and Nintendo, I finally got to appreciate the good library it had with emulation and modern handhedls, and its one of my favorite libraries now, by far really.

Its OG hardware though? No, I still hate this.
