What was gaming on Linux like back in the /vr/ era? I imagine Wine wasn't playing anything that needed DX8, and that even console emulators were shoddy.

there were some fun libre games, emulators, and WINE

ArmageTron was fun in 2003

sometimes there were some interesting commercial games with Linux versions, like Neverwinter Knights and DEFCON

Pre 2000 this it was honestly mainly used by people doing mandator university xourse stuff at home for C unix shells so they did not have to go in and use univesity systems
