I've looked up the ZX Spectrum version. It was released in Russia in 1996, and a year prior the programmers did some strategic game involving pirates. Not sure if it's an adaptation of Sid Meier's game, gotta check it out myself.

Only played the Apple II and DOS versions. DOS was nice, but A2 edges it out for me.

I think I might've played the FM Towns one too when I visited Japan back then, but it was just a few minutes in the computer store.

Try the PC-98 port. It has the original gameplay but was made by a lot of the same guys at Arsys who made the SNES version. A lot of the other Japanese ports reused Arsys' graphics but weren't otherwise made by the same people.

DOS/Amiga version but played through the SDLPoP port. Might be a perfect game, need to think on it more. SNES Prince is really nice and a great remake that also sort of doubles as a sequel because of how different and expanded it is. I don't think its quite at the level of the original though, there's a lot more flaws in the level design.

this, Mac version is best and most polished overall. Also, the player character looks Persian and uses a scimitar, as it should be.

The SNES version is like an official romhack; and in that sense it's excellent, since it experiments, pushes boundaries and tries new stuff, which is what a romhack is supposed to do. But you're also correct that it doesn't have the concise, elegant design of the original, which I regard as a masterpiece.

the sword fighting in the snes game kind of disappointed me with how trivially you can cheese it by spamming parry. does it work differently in any of the other versions?
Anonymous No.11960680
>>11960625
You can cheese in every game and also do the trick where you go behind them then run away. Fight honorably if you are going to fight.
Also, upon further consideration from things brought up in these spam threads, SNES is like the ultimate additional content version, but for regular playthroughs the other, more concise versions are the best.

There are triggers just for parts of the game in some sections. For example, if you don't pick up the sword and run past the first dude, you have the sword automatically in every encounter after. Anything you skip gets reset in the next section.

Just found out about the smoothmod for the Apple II version:

Sounds pretty cool but I haven't tried it yet so no idea how well it works or if it introduces any new oddities to the gameplay as a result.

Fighting feels slightly different in almost all versions though it doesn't really radically change how you play it.

The DOS version even had other numeral values for some of the guard skills than the original and the other versions. I don't know if that was to compensate for some kind of timing difference between PCs and Apple IIs or something, or if it was just a mistake by Lance Groody (I think the changed numbers were the same in decimal as the Apple II values expressed in octal).

Fun fact, the area where you fight Jafaar (beginning with falling tiles) is actually a separate level in the data, albeit with a smooth transition from level 12 (prison tower). Once you reach this area, on the other side of the invisible bridge, you're safe, in that you can't get timed out anymore. The clock can hit 0, but as long as you're in level 13, you'll be fine; anytime before that, including prison tower, and you're screwed.

Yep, same thing in the SNES version, you don't actually have 6 minutes per level for 20 levels but about 6m19s for 19 levels

I'm trying this right now. It seems to be working fine with the MAME version I had installed (0.279) and with the right Apple II roms in the right folder.

It feels a lot closer to the DOS version this way. Though the freezing of movement every time a jingle plays still takes some getting used to.

Having reviewed a longplay of the Apple II version, I have to say, while the original lacks the polish of the Mac version, in some ways its simplicity is better. And the aesthetic contrast between blue & orange, and the design of objects like torches and potions, is just better.
I'm still personally biased towards Mac, but the original Apple II is best in some ways, I'll admit.

as I already explained, SNES PoP is an official romhack, and it does that very well. However, it does not surpass the original, which is exemplified by the Apple II original, with Mac port as a close second.

Actually after checking both again I take that back. Sword fights are actually pretty nice in the new Atari version. The C64 however...

>>11969681
It was made in 2021 so it's not from back in the day. The C64 port was also a recent port. Neither the 64 or the Atari 8-bits had any official ports back in the day.

to elaborate
on Apple II, the torch flames are more dynamic, the pixels fizzing from the potions are more charming somehow, and the palace windows are actually grated windows as opposed to aesthetic insets. Relating to the latter, in level 12 (prison tower), mac had special stone windows, which were cool I guess, but the original had palace windows, and I think mixing palace/dungeon tiles was the intention. To reiterate, the blue/orange contrast works, and the clone looks cooler too.
While the sounds are bare-bones, they work, and they're often more subtle, as opposed to later versions where they're a bit overpowering (especially the chompers).
Anonymous No.11971135
>>11971085
I will say there are a few things the Mac port does better, like shortening the pause after winning a duel, and improved designs for Fat Man and Jafaar. Also cool how the fizz for poison potion is sort of purplish-red, a subtle but noticeable difference from the health potions.
So there are exceptions, but only exceptions to the rule. Also, just realized that the entrance/exit doors have opposite colors in the Apple II, which again is just better.
Also, no idea why I'm posting itt so much, but I just do

Yeah I love that blue/orange dithered look of the original. I grew up with the DOS version but I really like the Apple II version despite its limitations.
