>no kanji in famicom games, so words are way harder to identify, making reading comprehension significantly more difficult
>no drop shadow for white text in 8-bit games, so it takes longer to read and gather important information about the player's character
>super mario bros the lost levels being one of the few 8-bit that fixed that issue by adding a grey or black drop shadow, depening on the level's environment

not just "retro" for me because of course people have been doing it for ages: fading the whole screen to white, ever, when the game's story/mechanics don't specifically call for it
the default color to fade to must always be black
any other dark color would also be fine - but quite often they choose white, for no reason at all
protect my eyes from stupid game developers

Fade to white conveys a different feel/mood and feels generally more dreamlike
OoT made the compromise of fading to light gray to hurt your eyes less:

I hate the use of backtracking as punishment for dying to a boss. In my opinion a level and a boss should be separate challenges, but related in the sense that your ability to navigate the level successfully determines how many lives you have left for the boss. Having to replay part of the stage to get back to boss is bullshit.

Although it's not limited to side scrollers, rpgs that don't put save points before boss fights can kiss my ass, too. If I have to beat my head against the wall numerous times with a particularly difficult boss so be it but don't yank away my progress up to that point. Yeah, it raises the stakes, but losing any significant amount time already invested isn't a fair trade-off.

Not exactly game related, more like publishers being fucktards.
>remake of old game comes out
>old version gets renamed in storefronts
Makes me so mad. Like when the remake of RE4 came out, Capcom renamed the original on Steam to Resident Evil 4 (2005) while the remake is just Resident Evil 4. No, FUCK YOU!
Leave the original alone and name your slopmake Resident Evil 4 (2023) or Resident Evil 4 Remake.

I like the idea of dungeons and bosses being a combined challenge. I actually wouldnt mind seeing more RPGs where the dungeon can not be escaped from until you beat the boss, making you really use all the mechanics and items you have to their most use. I am more annoyed when there is a shit load of story stuff I have to go through again because a boss fight is right after it and I die on it.

This but in shmups when the upgrade is actually a downgrade and you have to remember which upgrades are shit and still sometimes you'll accidentally hit one and then die. Not dissimilar to accidentally switching weapons in gng.

>no kanji in famicom games, so words are way harder to identify, making reading comprehension significantly more difficult
In Metroid Fusion they had an option for kanji or hiragana. The kanji mode was labeled for "adults", but really I think it's most useful for people learning Japanese as a second language. Any native speaker knows enough context to recognize that when the character says "kami" they're referring to paper and not god or hair.

i hate this too but only when you have enough money to get everything by default, the idea was for you to just buy what you can afford (or preferably keep on weaker armor that boosts offensive stats if feasible). besides separating grinding money and grinding exp is rarer than it oughta be in most rpgs, so gaining those levels is often enough even without the armor.

RPGs need someone who gets the concept of pacing for this problem. I think it's better to buy sporadic big upgrades here and there as you adventure and then loot is more balanced, or can be recycled in a way that goes towards buying the big upgrades. RPG economies in general seem like they're really hard to get right and although the modern craftingslop solution isn't perfect it is meant to bandaid this problem. Some CRPGs solved this problem with big parties with -somewhat- interchangeable weapon sets for characters so when you buy the big cock sword someone else in your party gets an upgrade with the other sword, down the line etc.

Why do you say this as if it's something that has the potential to happen, the whole point of this board is to discuss games that were released over 20 years ago.

So you sell the old equipment and still have more money you did before grinding, not to mention the experience you got in the process.

Secondly you said you "grinded for the entire party", I don't believe the dungeon offers free loot for "the entire party" and certainly not "immediately".

So not only you brought this on yourself for grinding more than what the game really wants (the game wants you to make choices); but it's not as bad as you make it sound. You're the kind of person who blames a game for having choice because of your own inability to deal with it and then when you have a glass that 75% full you decide to only look at the 25% part of it that's empty.

You were supposed to not consoom mindlessly, but rather probe around the new dungeon and see how it is after buying only a few upgrades for your party. At that point, you find out whether your party can either handle it and get dungeon loot upgrades, or retreat and try again with new cash/exp/intel from the dungeon, and if it seems like you're hopelessly outmatched THEN you grind.
This is an element of intuition and a school of mental skill that most players never see in RPGs. Most players are blind grinders..

It's what companies want, not what people want. Remakes are made to make the game marketable again. You know game industry absolutely hates the used game market and does everything to kill it.

Same, anon. White flashes are even worse. Japanese developers in the 90s loved them for some reason, there are JRPGs where every battle starts with a white flash or wipe. Maybe they don't get migraines in Japan.
