I always go Fearow, and its always one of the "safe pokemon" on my team who ends up higher level than the rest, because it's good. Unlike say Gen2 Growlithe I only force level up because of autism

jolteon is solid, but vaporeon is the standard choice.

Pretty boring team. You're not 9 anymore, play with something more interesting. Go out of your way and deliberately don't rely on your starter and legendaries.

Heres how I play that keeps things interesting and keeps me coming back: I have a master save file that Ive completed the dex on for each gen and caught more or less everything. I pick a random team of whatever 6 stupid mons Im feeling like atm before even starting a new game and then breed eggs so theyre all level 5. Then I'll start the new game and trade them all over as soon as the tutorial segment is done(or just use PKHex and drag and drop in Gen 3s case since it has a ton of artificial trading restrictions for no reason.) and I just play through the whole game with those. I find this far more interesting since you usually don't have these Pokemon early on and completely transforms the experience every time since you're never really sure what to expect. You do lose some of the fun of catching whatever you find and adding it to the team but honestly theres only so many possibilities doing it that way and once you do it once theres no real surprises left. I genuinely believe the way I do it is the entire reason breeding exists to begin with, as well as those postgame exclusive Pokemon people love to complain about only being obtainable then, its all so you have new possibilities for your next run. This whole process is made easier than ever with emulation and flashcarts so theres no excuse anymore. Do something fun and that speaks to your soul, not what all the normies are doing. Picrel was my most recent Fire Red team.

Fair enough. It takes a bit of work at first but once youve completed your dex, youre done forever and never have to do that again. The only real prep after that is just making some eggs. Hell, if you don't care about your mons being "legit" you can just use PKhex and make them yourself. Idk to me its worth the extra effort to avoid playing the game with the same things every single time. I played Gen 1 60 times last year and this one simple thing made it fresh and fun every single time without resorting to something lame like doing a Nuzlocke or playing difficulty hacks.

Physical special split. Mostly gen 4 moves pretty sure the sprites might even be gen 4. All kanto mons are catchable some johto. Entire map has been recreated new story much harder game elite 4 is at 75. More battles with team rocket . The story is kinda bland whatever but the battles are alot of.fun. its a good romhack id say play it

It perplexes me that the developers wouldn't just stick in a little optional mode that'd do this sort of thing automatically as an easter egg for weirdos who love the game but can't be challenged by it anymore. Almost any game that lets you choose your own "loadout" of characters or moves or equipment in a highly customized way would benefit from a mode like that, one that'd pick some random crap for you and force you to roll with it. As long as it's appropriately hidden behind unlocking requirements and downplayed in the menu system, low-skill players can be prevented from being tricked into thinking it's something they MUST conquer in order to have properly finished the game, while high-skill players can have something cool to enjoy without needing to resort to the extra hassle of using a GameShark, hunting down and applying a romhack, or annoyingly maintaining arbitrary challenge-run rules in one's own head.

I usually use Pokemon I like, but sometimes a Pokemon is just flat out outclassed by something else to such a ridiculous degree that not using the better Pokemon just feels stupid. Like why would i use any other Electric or Flying type in a Kanto game other than Zapdos? The only time I don't grab Zapdos is LGPE ||but that's not retro|| because he outclasses every other option for both Electric or Flying Pokemon. Zapdos has the best Special Attack of all Kanto electrics, and 100 Speed is good enough to outspeed nearly anything considering it comes at level 50 and you have EVs/IVs and the AI doesn't. In pure flying type performance it's not as good as Dodrio, but Dodrio can't do shit other than spam Drill Peck and Tri Attack anyway.
