Why doesn't this get the canonical respect of Castlevania or The Legend of Zelda? It's easily the best side scroller of all time.

It's ok but Ninja Gaiden 1 is the infinitely better and more iconic game.

Yeah Ninja Gaiden 1-3 is straight up one of the greatest trilogies in gaming. Even if CV2 was as good as 1 and 3 I'd still prefer NG

Sorry NG bros but when it comes to themes:
Halloween > Ninjas
I don't make the rules but we all need to play by them.

Castlevania is infinitely better than Ninja Gaiden in every aspect except for the gameplay in my opinion. Honestly I can't even explain what Ninja Gaiden is supposed to be aesthetically/thematically, it feels like an amalgamation of absolutely random stuff, that goes for the 3D ones too

Castlevania NES has always been overrated, but Ninja Gaiden not nearly as good or innovative as Zelda. It's just another shitty side scroller.

They killed their legacy by making the sequels exclusive to baka gaijin Xbox. If they had brought it back on playstation or nintendo it would still be just as well remembered as other NES greats such as Castlevania and Mega Man.

I've never been satisfied with 3d ninja gaiden as a successor to the 2d games, it's just not the same kind of fun at all.

This is the answer.

The actual old game enjoyer doesn't care, but the trendy youtube watching, remaster buying retro gamer only cares about what is "still relevant today" or rather what the modern trends tell him to consume. Why do you think we get so many Castlevania games but Mega Man fell from grace? The fucking Netflix shows. Why are we getting DKC threads and RE threads all the time? And more importantly, why do you think so many posters in those threads are fucking retarded beyond belief?

>>11962514
It's good except for the parallaxed backgrounds not being smooth at all to the point it's distracting. It fixed a couple of glitches and the final boss is a bit different.

>>11962205
The NES nostalgiafags and trend chasers are gone because now the trendy nostalgia discourse is with newer consoles (soon those will be gone too as the trend shifts). But that's a good thing, it means the people left talking about it are actual enjoyers instead of trendy fags that played the NES because the man on youtube told them to or because "I'm going to the past to play the shitty games that suck ass xDDDD".

Ninja Gaiden 2 is just annoying to play. And the worst thing isn't even the level hazards, but the fact that they nerfed your sword and its pathetic hitbox can barely hit anything.
Anonymous No.11963546
Much like Zelda II and Castlevania II, it also stinks. It's annoying to play. Your sword hitbox feels either really small or that it's active frames are too short. I think it's immediately noticeable if you play NG1 and 2 back-to-back. Another thing is that every level has some obnoxious gimmick.

Castlevania is still pretty loved and while there hasn't been a mainline in ages (because Konami is busy being retarded as per usual) there have been modern things like Vampire Survivor (being a clear homage to it to the point they even got a crossover with them somehow) and Hollow Knight (reminding people that metroidvania are fun even if this site hates it for some strange reason) keeping it fresh in people's minds.

Meanwhile Ninja Gaiden only really ever gets compared to Devil May Cry due to the 3D games and not very favorably since DMC fans can be a bit...let's say special.

I've noticed this trend and I think it's because a lot of people will comment on games they've read a blurb about but never actually played before. e.g. someone reads the Ninja Gaiden article on Wikipedia, "notable for having cutscenes when few games did" and think that means it's a moviegame. There was a Prince of Persia thread a while back where some anon declared it a 'moviegame', probably because they saw it described somewhere as a cinematic platformer.

>movie game
That's its unique selling point, it's not a FMV game obviously but the cutscenes are what made it popular. This and great music. But is it as good as Strider? Is it as good as Shinobi games? Is it as good as Ninja Spirit? Is it as good as Tiger Road? Is it as good as Kabuki quantum fighter? Is it as good as nes Batman games? NO. And I can go on and on. I was very surprised by how much boomers hyped up that game which was at best mid by already low famicom standards. It's the MM2 of the series and at least the sequels were better.

No. I could maybe agree if you were talking about Valis or some shit but this was absolutely not the case with Ninja Gaiden. I haven't played all of the games you've listed but yeah I think Ninja Gaiden is a great action sidescroller, there's no doubt about that. I honestly don't get how anyone who enjoys the genre could think that Ninja Gaiden is 'at best mid', let alone bad like you claim in your previous post. You probably just have an agenda against the game because it's one of the most popular games in its genre and I don't blame you, that's just board culture after all. Popular thing bad regardless of its quality

Personally I just think they're either idiots or people pretending to be idiots and presenting obvious bad faith arguments to make people mad since 4chan is dead and no one is allowed to be genuine about stuff they like if it's not on the pre-approved list (and even then it makes some people mad)

I recently started playing ninja gaiden black for the first time and it feels like a real good beat 'em up. Which reminded me that the original ninja gaiden was an arcade beat 'em up. In that sense 3d ninja gaiden is a great successor to the original game, just not to the one people usually have in mind.

no it isn't, a beat em up is focused on extended crowd control of enemies on a single screen. ninja gaiden is focused on constant forward momentum and platforming with enemies functioning more as brief obstacles.
Anonymous No.11963979

it filters a lot of ppl
i think thats it
its definitely one of the tightest controls on any sidecrolling action-platformer in the 8-bit era. there are no tighter controls to be had anywhere

this is the thing that i think rly gets ppl
they know its a hard game, so they try to take it slow to compensate
but going slow in a NG game is a fucking death sentence. so they just get frustrated and give up
