MK4 wasn't as bad as people say , the main thing that brought it down was the "hard transition to 3d" and the new characters who were lesser replacements of older ones and if you noticed, MK fans are very touchy about their favorite characters being missing hence UMK3

As for the rest of the series, Deadly Alliance and Deception were fine, I'm OG so I'm always gonna prefer the 2D fighting but those games weren't hated at all. Armageddon was considered a let down by many, vs. DC sold well but most hardcores didn't like it, and MK9 was universally praised

I haven't played the games since then because they just kinda lost my interest

Smoke is the least based. Jade and Noob at least by the next game, enhanced the stories of Kitana and Sub Zero/Scorpion. Smoke just became SZ2s beta orbiter who kept using Scorpions moves and never had a solid bg of his own

Scorpion was the only non Chinese Asian before, even if the actors were clearly caucasoid like unmasked Subzero, he was canonically Chinese. They never specified Scorpion was Jap till later, but because he was just called a ninja and not Lin Kuei like Sub Zero, it makes sense

Lin Kuei was a real world piece of ninja mythology back then, supposedly the Chinese assassins who were the original basis of the Japanese ninja. The ninjas all had completely different stances and specials in MK2. Ryu/Ken were literal head swaps, they only gave them small move tweaks after a few re-releases (Super SF2 added the flaming dragon punch and burning fireball). Akuma... swapped heads and legs and added an air fireball.

Then by UMK3 you had like 2 sets of stances and winposes used for 6 ninjas, plus two of them had a near identical moveset (Scorpion, Smoke), plus you had 3 female ninjas and 3 cyborg ninjas. So thats 3 characters turned into 12.
Meanwhile, SF Alpha was up to 4 shoto clones, of which Dan was the only one with unique moves unless you count Akumas teleport and Shungokusatsu. By SFA3 Dan got a unique stance.

The worst was that Marvel vs Capcom had Ryu being literally able to turn into Ken/Akuma. On the other hand, MK Trilogy added Cameleon who can literally turn into any of the ninjas.

so yeah going by numbers alone, Mortal Kombat is way worse when it comes to cloning.

Shotos are less in number, but all have the same basic specials even if tweaked. A fiery dragon punch is still just a dragon punch, but a spear vs. an ice ball vs. a shadow clone grab vs. a lightning bolt are all totally different
