I have only played the first deus ex. How does it compare to invisible war and the other ones? I never looked into the sequels.

If you like the 1st one you might not like any of the others. HR kind of has a cool story but the story is retarded. Honestly more fun kind of just playing it as a sandbox and exploring and seeing what you can get away with. The stealth parts are actually kind of fun but still optional. MD, I don't know. It looks and plays a lot better but everything kind of just sucks more for the most part. Right as the story starts to actually get interesting and it feels like you might get some kind of payoff it just ends. Seriously the last 2 "quests" happen at the same time and involves you having to save some guys and kill another guy on whatever order you want but there's a soft time limit that alters the ending a little. So I save the guys then go to kill the guy and as soon as I kill the guy the fucking game ends. Then a cutscene that sets up the sequel that never happened and a fuckings news report vaguely talking about things you did in the game(choices matters!). Still never played Invisible War but I'm going to try it soon. The other 2 are worth checking out at least but there's nothing there that you should feel like you missed out on.

Invisible War is worse by pretty much every metric, but I still found a few things to enjoy in it. I thought HR was pretty boring overall and didn't have anything I found particularly interesting, it was higher quality than IW but somehow more consolized and boring.

IW is good, play it now while you still remember the first game's story since it functions as an epilogue to that. The same people worked on it, the negativity towards it mostly comes from it being a console-first game, but at its core it's the same game. The prequels were made by same random studio which did better than anyone expected back then, they play good but are toothless compared to the first two games, especially the second one is very dull, couldn't finish it.

Invisible War is a masterpiece. It was extremely well received during its time. Anyone deriding it is a contrarian larper who wasn't around then.

I didn't play HR or MD, but both those games came off to me like they're too well designed to the point that they're gamey.
1 is from that era where devs tried to make the levels feel like actual places even if it was kinda rough. There for sure were gamey levels in 1 too, but it was more of the money ran out than intent.

All games from major franchises were well received on release during that time.

Kind of are. HR is cool because it feels like it was made by people who didn't understand how FPS games work and then they just built some big levels with hidden paths for you to play around in. There's some obvious hand holding like placing you right in front of a vent but there's a lot you can just figure out on your own. MD does that more often and it plays like an actual 1st person shooter, and mostly all the new augs arent fun or really useful. It gives you offensive augs that could be OP if you ised them right but then they only give you 1 boss fight in the whole game to use them on.

Kind of the same thing with those 2, money and time. They cut stuff from HR and apparently they cut a lot of stuff from MD. The endgame of MD feels like it should be the start of the 2nd half of the game. They don't feel like Deus Ex really at all.

IW has small maps which break the flow. Otherwise it's pretty fun and lets you fool around. It's also closer to the first game than HR/MD.
