Dont have a picture but i still remember being hyped about Killer 7 and eventually not buying it (or asking my dad to buy it) because IGN gave it a 5.5 with the title "Killer 7 more lole Killer 5.5" and because we were working class my dad didn't just buy me any game i wanted at any time, so i decided to just not get it, played it years later and its one of my favorite games ever. Screw you IGN.

2 points of interests for me in this review: acknowledge how influencial Pandemonium was (which I always say in the "forgotten games" threads), and another review that claims infinite continues make the game worse which gets to show how far the "harder=better" mentality went and how that standards have evolved (these days it's more like "finite continues=bad design" and that's not new since even AVGN complained about that early on).

Even if setting aside the lost prototype and new game they included with that new collection, both of them included new modes, practicing and also various game settings, along with being highly accurate, something very important for shoot em up players. Being able to enable/disable slowdown in the PS2 one alone says more about it than that whole review, and things like hitbox viewing aren't present in your average emulator and do matter to those who play these games, which is why they buy them. Saying "this is a worthless purchase because I don't care about these things" is like doing a review of a racing game talking not about the handling and physics, but the lack of a Crash Bandicoot-styled mode where the cars jump and spin through platforming levels.

>Due to development constraints, the plot in the international versions of Ace Combat 3 was heavily cut down, with characters, backstory, and its multiple endings being completely removed. This version lacked voice acting and the majority of animated cutscenes present in the Japanese release, with the non-gameplay story elements being told through text slideshows between major missions.

>Frognation, a Japanese dubbing company, was contracted to assist in production of the localization process. They contacted Agness Kaku, a translator known for her work on games such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and D2, to help translate the game. She recalled doing a demo translation based on the original Japanese storyline, but because of funding being cut Namco America scrapped the translation entirely and chose to completely re-do the plot for overseas audiences; this included removing the multiple endings, branching story paths, and almost half of the missions. It was also slightly altered to fit onto a single disc. While an official reason was not given for the cut of funds, Kaku believes it was due to the game not selling as well as Namco hoped in Japan, which gave the American division little hope in it being successful either.

Frankly this just goes to show that gaming used to evolve very rapidly. Compare 1993 to 1996, or 1994 to 1997. The difference was insane. Even 1998-99 to 2001-02 was ridiculous. Even if you took the same gen, just 2 years difference could mean a jump from Crash to MGS, from SM64 to OoT and Goldeneye.
It's today when 3 years is basically nothing. There won't be another jump to 3D, or open world and FPS on console.

Most US magazine reviews are what you might expect of the era, but the constant candidness and general flippant attitudes of the Bong magazines make them more notable. Even the people in the UK admit some magazines got even WORSE and would try to go "eh lads lads lads you like footy right footy the best babes lads lads footy" to drum up sales before folding.

Or it's just one guy posting the vast majority of pages. Take your pick.

That was me in a previous thread about UK OPM, I still think they were - very high quality magazine for their first 5 years, but you can see that change after the millennium. I think the biggest thing which sticks in a lot of people when they read these reviews is that they were written by people who lived down in London and were of a certain class background and it would come across painfully clearly in how they wrote and their sense of humour.
Anonymous No.11981014

That's not just them. It felt to me like almost the entire magazine field changed with the 6th gen and the 00's, new graphical styles, new reviewers and editorial directions, everyone wanted to pretend they were hip and modern and wanted to make way with the "old world". Americans like to blame 9/11 on everything that changed in the early 00's, but it was much more global.

In 1996-97 you could still find reviews praising difficulty and complaining when games are too easy. In the 00's this mentality was gone and ""hardcore gaming"" was just "we won't go so low as playing sports game yo, DMC and MGS2 now that's games for the true gamers!"
