Retro games that still hold up visually

That looks kind of bad by today's standards. You'd have to be pretty out of touch to think it holds up.

Looks good to me. Graphics these days are too blurry and overdetailed.

Yes. What you can't see though, is the fps counter showing it's struggling to maintain 10 fps. But it looked that good on screenshots.

He's right you fag. You can barely differentiate enemies from backgrounds in modern games due to the ugly excessive amount of detail.

I remember playing this in '08 at 720p with settings down to almost the bare minimum on a new GPU for the time and the fans all locked to 100%. It was cool.
It's not retro.

It's so cool how you can actually knock down trees and buildings. I wish more games had this level of interactivity.

Zoomer retards don't know about the plastic screen overlays that you had to slide on top of the crt screen
You can't see it on screenshots, but game looked 10 times better.

We consider something retro, whether it's games or electronics, as long as it's 20 years old and the game still looks cool

ITS NOT RETRO AND I SWEAR TIME HASNT MOVED ONWARD, I'M NOT MIDDLE AGED NOW AND PEOPLE BORN AFTER THIS GAME CAME OUT ARE TOTALLY NOT GOING TO BE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE BY THE END OF THE YEAR!!!

Today the standard is Fortnite and Overwatch. Crusts is better looking than some of the most played games. Cod is also looking weaker as they keep losing technology and use brighter, duller palettes with different shaders

Crysis was only fun in the editor and spawning in stuff to mess with the physics and ragdolls, the gunplay wasn't great.

Not too long ago, I saw anons using a screencap of a character model of a game from the mid-2000's made of like 100 polygons at most as "proof" graphics haven't evolved in the slightest in two decades
Anonymous No.11967467
>>11966723
shit take. the suit powers combined with enemy AI that leads to a great gameplay loop. the alien section of the game is hated precisely because the change of pace is so drastic and severe.

REmake, obviously

Lara Croft, the original model of her, had 200 polygons. That was in 1996.
The mid-00s remake of that game had her on 7000.
So I'm not sure who's more out of touch here.

Graphics peaked in the late 6th and early 7th gen. There was no reason to ever progress beyond this point. Games were detailed enough to create convincing worlds with high poly count, good animations, nice lighting effects, etc., but were removed just enough from reality to maintain a "gameyness" and readability that has been lost over the last 15 some odd years. I know OP is shitposting, but you look at that and think "yep, that's a video game". It does, in some strange way, share an essence with games far older than it. When you look at big AAA games today, it looks like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within cranked up to 11 with the most fugly, uncanny characters and overdetailed, visually-mangled environments you've ever seen in your life. Things have gotten worse than you could possibly believe.

True. Games like Doom 3, Riddick, FEAR, Condemned, Gears, Bioshock looked perfect. It was all downhill from there

It is a pretty basic design lesson that too much detail creates useless noise visually.

is Crysis even good? all i remember is that it was the benchmark for a computer with good graphics capability, like the whole "can it run Doom" thing but the opposite. but nobody ever talked about the game itself or the story or anything

No one talked about the gameplay at the time because no one could run it. It became the poster child for sour grapes, where people would say the game was just graphics with no gameplay, then you asked what was wrong with the gameplay and they wouldn't be able to say anything specific other than "it becomes bad when the aliens appear". Only a few people talked about the actual game. I started seeing more gameplay discourse years after, when people like nanosuitninja started posting gameplay videos showing the game can be fun, accompanied by people suddenly saying that it was always one of the most underrated games, or the best game ever. To me it was a fun sandbox with samey enemies until the aliens appear and my machine couldn't handle the snow, so I dropped the game and forgot about it.
