First thing's first, anon. Get an OEM controller and not some third-party slop before you start bitching about it.

You're meant to hold the middle part for that your finger rests on the Z trigger. The way you hold it will not allow Z to be hit easily or quickly, as most N64 games require.

If you ever played an N64 game on a normal controller then you know how bad it feels to use the shoulder buttons as the Z button.

Depends on the game since usually the R and L buttons are not needed and the game gives you control options. So middle and right.

I believe I genuinely am the only person to hold the controller this way, and everybody makes fun of me when I show them this, but don't knock it until you try it.

Controller turned 90 degrees, right hand on the analog stick, left hand on the a/b/c buttons. The left index finger can hit the R button and the bottom of the left palm can hit the L button effortlessly, plus you got Z right the right index finger.

It's more or less the same as the intended way to hold it except the right and left hands are reversed. You can also hit a lot more button combinations since you have some more fingers available on the left hand, whereas you ordinarily would be using just your thumb on the right hand.

It's really good for platformers. The main problem with the default hold is that your thumb has to hover back and forth over the c buttons and the a/b buttons. But if you do it that way, you can change the camera really smoothly while using the a/b buttons at the same time.

You can also do the "reacharound" thing where your right index finger reaches over to the c buttons, but you're already getting in silly territory though and may as well turn the controller 90 degrees.
