I had a Nigerian roommate for one year in college (plus two random white guys, all in an on-campus apartment). He was a nice guy and his friends from the Nigerian student group would come around a lot; they were nice too. (Also a couple of them were female and one was hot.) He became offended with me once for routinely locking the apartment's main door, because it would never even have occurred to me not to lock the door when I was the last one leaving, but apparently he expected a culture in which you let your friends come and go as freely as possible, so when I locked the door he thought I was implicitly objecting to the presence of his friends. I didn't have any significant possessions in the main part of the apartment so I resolved the issue by ceding the main door to everyone else and locking my bedroom door during classes instead.

Anyway one of these guys mentioned that he was into Command & Conquer I think? But when they played games together it was always Tekken, and it was always loud.

He did mention that he'd expect random thefts where he came from but not in a small college town in the midwestern US where we were, which is maybe fair enough. I wasn't super paranoid about the issue or anything. I did lose all my childhood NES games once during a house robbery though, in this same part of the country. But that was in a somewhat larger and more run-down city.

Unc here. For me earthbound and chrono trigger are probably my most replayed games over the years. I also remember playing obsidian, interstate 76 and muppets treasure island a lot cause those were the only games that ever worked on our computer, which until my brother discovered porn I never had to share.

Yeah. Obsidian is a puzzle fmv game, same with the muppets. Interstate 76 was like twisted metal but less arcade and more sim, you still drive and shoot but you also pick your guns and tires and engine, and if you pick small car you can’t load it up with all the heavy shit, but if you pick a big car it drives like shit cause it’s the 70s.

The main psychological difference between white and black is that whites have way more inhibition.
You ever see those street magician reaction videos? The white people will smile or laugh, and the black people will freak out like the guy just bent reality in front of them. Less inhibition has the effect of everything seeming way more viscerally intense. And fighting games are all about that. So is FPS multiplayer but that isn't retro. Stuff like strategy, rpgs, puzzle games aren't about visceral intensity.

My understanding is American Africans were too oppressed to aford games or electricity until Eddie Murphy started his work emancipating African Americans in the 80s and showing them things like skiing trips. Actual Africans unless they were very privileged did not play video games because every day involved wondering where the next meal comes from and avoiding dying violently. The one time I went over to my black friends house they were playing the warriors game on PS2, but they never would shut up about how awesome God of War is either. Anything older they mostly just dismissed as trash or too old. They later went on to steal a PS3 and got in some minor trouble, I didn't see them much after that so who knows what they are up to.
