>A mixture of apparent self-promotion
Annoying for sure, particularly with the quality of his work.

>and not being notable.
I disagree with that, he's made himself notable. In a bad way, sure, but notable nonetheless.

Also, this isn't particularly a real problem for a fanwiki like Doomwiki, which is dedicated to a niche subject. For regular Wikipedia, it's supposed to be a global universal encyclopedia, so naturally, too much stuff which is simply too miscellaneous or unimportant could VERY quickly add up way to much.

You don't exactly have that problem in this case, there's not exactly a daily onslaught of irrelevant non-Doom/non-iD stuff being constantly added to the wiki, and the readerbase and amount of contributors is very moderate.
I can certainly see being annoyed with the guy's intentional low efforts and self-promotion, but if he's been at all notable enough to write about a little, I fail to see the issue.

>>11970224
This is partially why, as TNT Evilution has pretty big historical significance for Doom and Doom modding for multiple reasons. However, a lot of the contributors only ever did Evilution, and then MAYBE one more thing, before moving on, so there isn't even necessarily much to write about for a full page on such a person.

Sounds like a bad phrasing. It's as if I ever decide to catalogue my own work there, everything will get removed only for the prospect of a few lucky visitors stumbling upon my page. Unless Doomguy 2000 is a budding musician who decided to litter the Doomwiki with Bandcamp links for some reason.
Anonymous No.11970354
Just finished Blood 1. Very good game, although the cultists make it a little too trial and error sometimes. I only finished the 4 episodes that originally came out with the game. Awesome ambience.

I played one level of each expansion, Post Mortem and Cryptic Passage... and boy I don't think I'm going to play the rest of either. Cryptic Passage has bullshit respawns (I fucking hate respawning enemies) and level 1 was rather long. Post Mortem is just bullshit gotcha after gotcha. There were a few of those in the original episodes, but honestly it's not my cup of tea. Hated them on Doom and hate them here.

Most difficulty level was E3M2: Siege. Since I don't savescum (I only save every level start), I died almost 10 times before finally completing it.

He's really a nothing special kind of guy. His works are largely deliberately bad stuff, as in .wads with shitloads and shitloads of levels which are all a single 64x64 room with an exit switch, which is the kind of thing which will make some people exhale briefly out of their nose out of extremely mild amusement, but not something which people are wont to sit down and play.

I could see the theoretical logic behind not wanting to encourage his behavior, but let's be real, extremely few people are going to have the energy and drive to commit themselves to this kind of... performative dullness, for a lack of better words, I seriously doubt that we're gonna see copycats, because it doesn't garner attention and it's not fun to do, so it's not even a viable avenue for trolling.

>>11970376
I could almost see the logic in that, but it feels almost moot. But maybe I'm being too subjective about it, I discovered that I had a page, and I edited the body of works to add a .wad which I made contributions to. Some people may be less restrained in that regard.

Which doesn't really make it alright to brush the guy off to a sidewalk. Page's been around for a decade and everyone seemed fine with it up until very now, the only alternative is straight removal. Anyway, there's no apparent credibility to the story as the latest post on the talk board dates back to 2015; which to note, also shut off the paragraph spillings by the usual (community pillar) member brazenly lecturing on "ego inflation". Black Plague, vanilla balance
>Draug
Generic projectile thrower with unusually low HP. They are weaker than fire gargoyles and during infighting lose to practically anything. Useless enemy, I barely notice their existence.
>Troll
Unlike the Draugr, the Troll is a good enemy. Not very tanky, makes you move, neither hard nor easy to dodge. Finally we have a dangerous melee foe in Heretic, I never regret using a Morph Ovum on a troll.

Zdoom's Rachael and Esselfortium have a longstanding beef with one another. Graf has obstructed development of boom- and vanilla-based mods and source ports for years, which have become doomworld's forte.

Doomer boards was cancelled for wrongthink from the beginning (post-2016), and yet refuses to go away, so DW are in a constant state of seethe over it.

Put differently, if zdoom is nazi Germany and DW is Soviet Russia, DB is Trump's America. It's only natural for them to hate each other, and for a normal person not to care who wins, because they're all awful

Scripts, too, are not hard-coded so you can add on a map any scripted actions you want.

All of these things can be done in vanilla.

You can spice up your singleplayer game while your friends are playing different games with Archipelago!

What is Archipelago?
>Archipelago is a cross-game modification system which randomizes different games, then uses the result to build a single unified multi-player game. Items from one game may be present in another, and you will need your fellow players to find items you need in their games to help you complete your own.
https://archipelago.gg/
https://archipelago.gg/faq/en/

Currently it has support for 76 games, for this thread there's DOOM I, DOOM II and HERETIC.
https://archipelago.gg/games

>How to setup?
All three use a modified Crispy Doom named Archipelago Doom (APDoom). There's server chat you can use and !hint command to know where your next progression item (map unlock or key).

The kind that'd not only be fine setting X hours aside to play at the same time in two different games, but also potentially having to wait for sizeable stretches of time within that period before you can actually progress through more of the game (I know there's a progression_balancing setting, but even the FAQ can't guarantee it works)

Sure Impie, Tormentor, kraf, shadowman and BigMemka got banned for stupid reasons that could be labelled as wrongthink, but they never became Doomer Boards members. RMG might be an exception. Absolutely talented mapper, good guy, that got banned for advertising his youtube channel or something. That's fucking stupid reason to ban him, considering dw is basically the go-to place for all corpos abd corpo-cocksuckers to advertise their stuff.

So better comparisons for these place would be:

Not to um actually you, but I think RMG got banned from Doomworld because he was in a project called Gorehounds of Doom that had its leadership changed mid-development. Can't recall who was there before, but Snaxalotl (who's trans) took it up and said all the maps had to be Boom or MBF21 - again, don't remember, but RMG got pissed about it because he had submitted like 3 or 4 maps and they'd need to be reworked.
Snax basically started acting like a comple cunt to Rasta (maybe because he's Russian), Rasta blew a fuse after a few times of taking shit and raged. He got the boot after linking news of trans people killing themselves or something to that effect.
Either way, Snax got scolded for shit leadership but Rasta got banned even though he was right in telling a bitch to fuck off. Shitty fucking site, shitty fucking culture.

Could be wrong, though. Long time.

Don't really think that there's a broader term for it. Just been calling it "sketchy" because it's funny to have all the file names be things like "sketchyshapes" and "sketchyphysics." Didn't really play enough of Post Void to say that it had a big impact on the style, but Afraid of Monster's introduction was an initial inspiration for the terminal art.

why do some WAD authors think that people want levels that are difficult to navigate and have some dumb puzzles just to progress?
I spent like 15 minutes just running around the first level in startdate 20x7 just to find both keycards. what's the purpose of it? is this why people play doom? to solve "which button do I press next" puzzles?

I'm my experience people who complain about this aren't paying attention to the level at all. I've seen people throw switches and then spin around expecting an ambush on every switch so that they can't see the obvious cues of a door opening, or where they should even investigate a change in the level. They whip into a room, throw switch, spin around like a lunatic and sprint out of the nearest door complaining that the have no idea where to go - having never stopped to look.

I don’t mean by that that he was looking around exploring, no, he was either looking at the floor, at closed doors, walking backwards - he got stuck in that encounter with barney because he kept trying to go through the normal citizen route and when he got to nova prospect gate he didn’t notice barney and just wandered for 20 seconds looking at floor and other fences - shit was frustrating to watch

It might be something like scope or limitations, but it almost feels surreal to even reread stuff like introductions?
I don't mean this so much like its necessarily a bad thing, just kinda makes you reflect on how different projects can get as they evolve, and how sometimes you might have had ideas better than your abilities.

https://www.retromags.com/files/file/7069-official-duke-nukem-3d-level-design-handbook-the/
You need to download comic book reading app to read it
It's an old book made in the 90's so some of the hotkeys are wrong compared to mapster32 but I only found one so far, the panning/scaling texture hotkey is different (the hotkeys are listed in the editor anyway). Most of the text of the book covers all the special effects, so for now just read up to how to create sectors, and texture stuff, and place sprites, which is pretty intuitive desu, aside from remembering not to move with WASD.
There's also this guide

We never learned what exactly happened, just that somebody was demanding $150 to return her safely and our parents assumed it's some prank and that she'll be back in a day or two but we never saw her again. I still remember out last conversation. She said that she will prove to me girls are better than boys at videogames by beating Doom II on Ultra violent difficulty setting. >Any thoughts of a terrible map in a good wad?
I replayed Herian 1 & 2 recently which are generally regarded as OK to straight up bad, despite Herian 2 being a 10 years of Doomworld WAD. I have lots of thoughts, about multiple maps, with my main takeaway being, "Herian 1 and 2 could be a really great early Zdoom WAD, if only it was 1 32 level WAD instead of 2, because the maps are either great or some of the worst maps you'll see in a well known late 90s wad."

Terrible Terrible Maps:
H1Map02: Airborne
H1Map03: Garden
H1Map05: Dungeon
H1Map07: Theatre
H1Map10: Switchroom
H1Map14: Tank
H1Map15: ROTT
Every H1 Map after 25
H2Map01: A Familiar Place
H2Map05: Lava Cave
H2Map07: Strange Place
H2Map08: He Shouldn't Be Here
H2Map11: Mixing Plant
H2Map12: Nightmare in Main Street
H2Map13: Cottage in the Hill
H2Map17: Arena

Cityisle from Herian 1 is the best map in either set, and Ian's magnum opus. It plays like a lost Jim Flynn or Bob Evans map from Eternal Doom. Spider from Herian 1 is also very good, and makes particularly good use of verticality and spiders. Trubble is an edit of Strife's 1st hub, but it's probably the best edit of it ever. Herian 2 though is full of great maps. Search for Supplies, Return to Town, Journey to Herian City, and Herian City are all amazing and could easily be mistaken for Eternal Doom maps. All 4 of those maps use a hub gimmick too, where you're somewhat returning to earlier visited areas from earlier levels, but little things have changed and you can access different areas. Maps 18-25 in Herian 1 use the same gimmick and it works there too. It's kind of depressing because, via his sheer inability to do quality control of his own maps, Ian ensured that most guys playing old Doom wads will skip his 2 classic WADS because there's so much filler and bad ideas mixed in with the levels that are absolute late 90s classics. I don't think any other WAD achieves the Heretic "bad 90s dark fantasy" feel better. The NIN midi OST helps.

Unreal 2004 is retro, but IIRC including Discord links in OPs are against the site rules, I think (if not outright written, then one of those unspoken but typically enforced rules).

Also, if we were to include one retro shooter Discord server link, what's to say others should then not be included? That would add up very quickly, a Quake one, a Blood one, a Duke one, a Half-Life one, a Wolfenstein one, more than a few Doom ones, etc, etc.
It would quickly eat up space in the OP post.

Further, we here at /doom/ do look to be a bit more independent from the overall communities of these games. Not completely detached, there's certainly overlap with users who are part of all these different communities, but /doom/ should primarily be /doom/, we like that this place isn't just a mere extension of places such as Doomworld, that we are in fact our own community.
Having a bunch of Discord links or general forum links and such would work against that I feel, and I think many anons will agree with me.

No. Pinkies/Specters get a propeller in their ass and move and bite at twice the speed, but all other monsters move at the same speed and use the same number of frames and frame durations for attacks.

Fireballs from Imps, Cacos, and Nobles move faster, but otherwise those monsters move the same. Fast will make them attack far more often, usually every other step they take towards you and while you're in their line of sight. They also react faster, going from idle to being woken up in less time (which is subtle, but it's there).
Nightmare makes their reaction time absolutely immediate.

I ran into a similar situation after trying a bunch of mods like Steel Dawn and some others, it kind of bricked my installation to where I couldn't progress in Return to Na Pali so I sadly had to reinstall everything. It's possible anon, with loads of save-scumming. Grab the shotty then the shell box, run to middle to get the armor and cause some infight, especially the Pain Elementals. You need to use corners and the chiansaw a lot. In the hitscanner room, you can do "open and close the door quick" trick to make them infight, then wake up and kill the others one by one. The most tricky part is Arachno/Rev room, but it's easy to make them infight while staying inside and close to the door (or circle running around the monsters if they give you space).

Also, in GZDoom (which you seem to be using), Lost Souls and Icon of Sin spawns are counted towards kill count whereas in vanilla they don't.

I'm not sure if I'll keep this effect for the last subweapon here, it's just a lesser version of Kustam's thunder beam, but of course it has a few more shots to it, and doesn't require you to aim. So maybe it's fine.

Also been fucking around with the shotgun-tier upgrade. Normally if you shoot too much with the gun it jams up, but with the upgrade you'll get a charge shot that's just a long beam, and that applies to the triple shot too.

Also gonna go back and add a unique debuff for the big heavy flail mode on the whip: It'll be an effect that causes a radial splash damage effect if a monster is killed while marked. Should make for some cool chain reaction shit if I get it right. This is all in service of one of the upgrades I wanna give Samson being the ability to mark multiple enemies in a radius with a charged whip strike.

I don't think I'm gonna hit my goal of finishing this mod by year's end, which fucking sucks.

Recurring theme with them of presenting a priced remaster that's less functional than concurrent source ports or fanmade patches/mods. I fired up their SS2 remaster, that they've been working on for what feels like 4-5 years, and it seems pretty neck and neck with what my modded version of the original SS2 already did and it costs like $3 if you're paycucking. Some updated models but that shit isn't important to me.
People probably have a higher opinion of ND the less that they interact with the communities for those games. I will say I'd appreciate it if they did a basic port of Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 for modern OS. Underworld Unity is just unpolished enough to make me play in dosbox instead.

I think the big part of it is their releases generally lacking with patching and company itself being too popular in indie-retro-FPS scene to a point where their fans can be as annoying as New Blood's.
From my personal experience lately (because I'm a Heretic + Hexen fan and wanted to see some shit fixed), I'll also say that their lack of community managers is infuriating. That Edward guy is such an obnoxious and condescending elitist cunt who seemingly views any question at Nightdive Discord server as personal attack or intentionally misinterpreting it. He's giving blatant "I don't wanna talk to you" attitude and it's baffling that they didn't hire someone who would at least pretend to care... and the funniest part is that server's moderators aware of it, but they say "he just answers honestly" and don't do shit about it.

TL;DR: People hate Nightdive for toxic elitism shown by both developers and fans.

I wish. There's NO community manager on sight in their server. None. Just one developer being an asshole because he apparently has to interact with people, but clearly doesn't want to. Like, I would kind of understand if it was "matching the attitude" thing (frankly, I saw at least one moment where it fits), but you get this with ANY question/report/complaint.
And then you match that with Bethesda's disgusting customer support where you either get automated replies 90% of the time or just get ignored. So yeah, no shit their re-releases don't get enough patches when it's near impossible to report anything to them. And when you manage to stick something into Nightdive's nose, you're met with "we know better, fuck off" attitude.

You are not alone with this. Nightdive has received shitloads of complaints about Edward. Not defending him, but he's highly autistic (diagnosed) so he lacks the social skills to the point that he doesn't know how to act friendly or do customer service. He isn't even trying to be asshole, but that's the only way he knows how to communicate. He would communicate the same way on date, to his first born baby or to his dying relatives, because his brain lacks the know-how of normal communication, so I wouldn't take it personally.

Sure he knows how to do network programming, which is an ass task to do. So he's clearly a gifted savant autist. Howerer it is major fuckup on Nightdive's part to not have a socially gifted person on custom service and not telling Edward to tone it down with his service. It's not good for Edward either to get a reputation as an almost satirical person (real life Sheldon) instead of just being a skilled programmer guy.

I'm split down the middle with them. They'll occasionally upgrade my older game licenses with new content that also come with questionable gameplay changes. They'll do something I agree with like remastering Killing Time, Powerslave, and Shadowman, and then they'll do something weird with Blade Runner. They'll often leave some games "updated enough" while others like Fresh Supply are left in a sorer state.
At the very least, they'll sometimes help with a renewed interest towards particular games leading to some new community content (like Quake 2), and a lot of their new content for older games can be played outside of their Kex Engine port. They'll sometimes get me to look into games I haven't given much of a chance, like Outlaws here, though I'll then get my fill and will have no interest in their remaster of it (especially when it's "Disney taxed" for $30).

If all you want to do to the sprite is to recolor the muzzle flash, then that would be really quick and easy to do, you would only need to add those frames and then the actor could use those for shooting plasma instead of bullets.

It would probably be quicker and easier than finding out if it's even possible at all to add some line of code for this, Slade even has a function for replacing colors in sprites with others in the palette, so you could plain copy over the relevant sprites (don't miss out on the rotations), and then just do that process.

Whatever client-side lag compensation they shove into these games might work well enough for co-op with a couple players, but once you have more than 4 it just goes to shit.

That isn't the case for computer ones since a good chunk already worked fine with sourceports, on the other hand i don't know how one is supposed to ship an old ass game that isn't guaranteed to work on a modern machine, You can't really sell it in its original state since that way you're just asking for a gazillion of complains about compatibility issues, don't know if gog just bundles fan fixes but using shit from others instead of some propietary thingy is also pmuch asking for trouble.

Well yes it can, but I understand your point of view if you don't have experience with autism. My little bro is on his 30s and is quite heavy on autism too. He has received therapy which has made things easier for him and rest of the family, but therapy can't undo autism. I see similarities on his and Edward's behaviour. My bro used to have friends, but his unfriendly behaviour drove all them off. He can't smile, flatter, show empathy or even speak in friendly tone. He always speaks in flat and almost angry tone. He continually insults people, because he can't soften what he wants to say, but he doesn't do that on purpose. He gets easily offended too (and then really fucking angry), so you can't insult him on friendly manner. Still he is not some evil sociopath, and he did like his friends and loves his family. But if he went some customer service job, lot of people would think that he is a major asshole. Never had any luck with girls either, but I really I can't blame them. Still I love my bro, but I admit he can be a quite heavy person on some times. Still I will never abandon him.

the one or two samefagging anti-megaman schizos seem to have calmed down so we can have nice things again
And I guess nobody made progress on the doom pics so there's nothing to trigger their autism

>the hardest level will probably be E4M1
E4M9 is much harder. Darkness everywhere, weapons are hidden and guarded, freely roaming iron liches can reach you from the beginning. Do not wand start it.

Okay. He must be having at least some acknowledgement of this. I had at least one experience with autistic people that I can recall and that guy eventually acknowledged that he had troubles with behaviour. Change it? No, but at least it was clear where it comes from and just giving a short warning would go a long way in Edward's case in particular. We probably just agree to disagree here at the end.
Either way, his colleagues at Nightdive should know fucking better if Edward really is just that autistic because I only have your word for it, which you know isn't quite enough - I'm just more willing to give a benefit of a doubt to anon than anyone from Nightdive/Bethesda/etc. Maybe they do know what they're doing and it's not just incompetence, but Nightdive having a shield from some complains. I could see that being the case.

Gun sprites in the menu there look pretty alright, though the grip on the Uzi makes my autism flare up, it's modeled after one of those chintzy blank guns they use in shitty low budget movies, it'd look cooler with the straight grip of the real on.
That's just me, but it'd be more like 90s DOS action games where they would be imitating Hollywood action movies in details like those.

I mean I do not have official papers on Edward's autism, but he himself has stated that he is a diagnosed autist and you can find some of his comments on his autism on dw and nightdive discord. But really it's only his word. Anyway if he isn't an autist he would act like an autist little too well. I don't think he would be that good of actor.

Anyway I do agree, that putting an autistic person on charge of customer service is so incompetent move that it seems like some real life satire. Howerer Nightdive is quite small company and this echoes the modern job market too well. You can't even get simple customer service job without having mad programming skills. Low end jobs are disappearing, and guys that shouldn't be doing those kinds of jobs, are doing them as their secondary job. Hell Edward is so incompetent as a customer service guy, that I'd prefer some black lesbian woman DEI hire at this point.
