What is your opinion on the old Tomb Raider games?
Anonymous No.11970360
1 is pretty good.
2 is the best, but the bullshit hitscan enemies ruin some levels.
3 is good, but too fucking long.
4 is okay.
What the fuck is 5.
HAHAHAHAHA 6.

1 - 8/10. I REALLY don't like Natla's Mines. Very straightforward. All meat, unfortunately no cheese.
2 - 9/10. A little bit too much cheese, but even more meat to make up for it.
3 - 9/10. Would be a perfect game if it weren't for the fucking atrocious LOST CITY OF TINNOS. Seriously, fuck that level.
4 - 8/10. Is really great in the beginning and end. Middle slows down a bit, and Alexandria is a bit tedious.
5 - 6/10. Lots of filler. Young Lara segments were pretty fun. There were a couple interesting levels like the Submarine and The Base

Lara Croft looks so rough and manfaced in those old games, why the fuck did she ever become such a huge sex symbol back then?

1 is good and groundbreaking for platformers at the time. There was absolutely nothing even close to the movement in tomb raider, maybe dk94, which is interesting to think that it also invented many of the moves sm64 used to further break ground in 3d platforming. I don't care what anybody says, both tomb raider and sm64 are insanely good 3d platformers for completely different reasons.
2 to is just a more polished version of one with a different setting
3 even more polish but samey
4 great, changes pave of the game in a way that many didn't like but I like it more than 3.
5 unpopular opinion, chronicles is actually the best tomb raider game. I spent more time replaying it than any of the others.
6 not tomb raider. same with every release since 6, they all suck.

1 is everything I want out of a game called Tomb Raider. The rare 10/10 vidya.
2 still has some good level designs, Temple of Xian is maybe the best in the series, but the hitscanner bullshit means I'll never replay it. The midair/underwater roll is a welcome update to the controls.
3 has way too many unforeseeable traps ruining what would have been otherwise decent levels. The lighting change that makes pickups impossible to see, presumably so you're incentivized to use the lighter, sucks ass.
Still haven't played 4-5, got burned out on 3's bullshit.

Chronicles is a huge change from the others, its more like a mystery movie where you're looking for clues around different cities and stuff.

sidestepping is the only way to make fine positioning adjustments
Lara doesn't really work as a protagonist for the game. why would a woman be doing all this, and why is she barely wearing anything? her legs and arms would be cut to bits
the combat might as well not exist, didn't really add anything besides tedium, the bats can go straight to hell
the save crystal thing was a good idea, but its execution felt lacking, like they were inconsistent with the spacing. I dropped it after the Chinese temple place or something, got to some Egyptian looking place where a giant orb zapped me to death instantly with zero warning

What lighter? Tomb Raider 3 uses flares, which Tomb Raider 2 introduced.

it just stands out more in a game like Tomb Raider which is trying to be a bit more realistic and grounded, obviously taking after the cinematic platformer genre in that regard with realistic fall damage, weighty animations and everything
to focus on those aspects of design and then hamstring it with a character that doesn't look the part just irks me. she looks more like an RE protag or something

I think she fits perfectly, like a British ripley with some ass n sass. She was like a rockstar for a few years. Everyone was fine with suspension of disbelief because she was a badass babe. Just enough roughness, with that English disposition, gave her a unique persona that nobody had really done before. They took badass Laura and turned her into a basic bitch made emotional mess in the new games.

Ah yes I remember how the series was hamstrung because of this bad character design, it could have been big otherwise but people hated that bare skin and breasts that in are bigger than 99% of athletic women actually have, totally broke the immersion

The entire series has been on a downward slope from the start, and I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you, but if you don't see this you have objectively shallow taste

LCoT is fine, not even that hard compared to Xian in the previous game. The real problems with TR3 are India (boring, too hard for early levels, Jungle is especially tedious), London (nonsensical, too big) and Nevada (doesn't give your gear back properly, nonsensical, no boss level so anticlimactic).
On the flipside, South Pacific and Antarctica levels are the best in all of classic TR. Even the infamous kayak is a cool idea in a strong level just marred by mandatory damage.

>Lara doesn't really work as a protagonist for the game.
She's up there with Mario and Sonic you absolute dunderhead.
>why would a woman be doing all this
Why would a man be doing it? If you want the actual answer(s) then there's lore but it's not hard to guess.
>why is she barely wearing anything? her legs and arms would be cut to bits
Have you seen what freeclimbers usually wear? Protip it's shorts and a T shirt. Gloves weren't that good in the 80-90s compared to today (based plastics innovation) and a lot of climbers didn't use them. Agree she'd have callouses like an alligator's hide.

lara's sidestep and walk are painfully slow, they make any precise alignment you need to do about 10X more arduous than they need to be. tombraider makes walking around in resident evil feel like quake.

the walk and sidestep are needlessly drawn out animations, they make any precise alignment you have to do about 10X more tedious than they need to be. makes resident evil feel like a snappy arcade game.

Backtracking (all areas are linked together)
Anonymous No.11971751 >>11972750
1 is the goat and makes you really feel like a tomb raider. Level design is simply unmatched to this day.

2 Has way too combat and vehicles gimmicks to be considered good. You can see how Toby leaving shattered the tomb aspect of the series.

3 was made by tomb raider diehard fans and thus it feels like one of those annoying difficulty mods then an actual sequel made by the devs.
Levels are a mixed batch with London being the worst.

4 is underrated and a proper return to form minus backtracking. Best puzzles and an actual focus on tombs.

5 is the devs just throwing random ideas in hope it will kile the series. Ironically the ideas are not bad but the bugs make the game practically unplayable.

As a kid, I remember feeling a distinct aversion to how hard Lara Croft was pushed as a thing.
>dude, she's so sexyyyy!
No she isn't. She looks like a triangle.
We had Street Fighter by this point, and people were picking Lara over Cammy. Explain that.

I've finished Legend, Anniversary, and the 2013 reboot, along with about half of the remastered TR1. Underworld looks nice and the character design is really sexy, but the camera makes it borderline unplayable. I have barely gotten to the second level.

Tomb Raider at its best is basically Metroid Prime before Metroid Prime ever existed. It's a sublime and quiet gameplay experience.

It's really not. Everything is shit and amateurish. The level design is full of copy paste and completely mirrored areas, and not just those few I've posted, it's everywhere, which is a huge tell about the lazyness and terrible standard of the game design.

>in b4 real life has mirrored stuff everywhere
