I really don't understand the hateboner Toshinden gets. Yeah, it feels a bit primitive compared to some other fighting games, even on the same console, but people act like the game killed their family or some shit.

Because it was getting near perfect scores across the board because it was the best looking fighter for home consoles in early 95, but underneath there was only a somewhat mediocre fighter.

FGC adjacent "Influencers" like Maximilian, Super Best Friends, JWong, etc had a detrimental impact on the perception of fighting games as a whole. They said something was good or bad, and it became gospel. Just like James Rolfe with Nintendo games.

BAT3 was silly, and Subaru was legit garbage, but BAT1&2 were both quality games.

It was pushed a lot by Sony because it's graphics and tone of the time, but then better stuff came very soon after its release and then people saw it as what it as in reality, then the sequels didn't get that Sony push and was forgotten. I really dislike how it controls and the general feeling of its system.

I remember my friend group instantly treated it like it was shit. I think there was a lot of natural contempt for any fighting game that wasn't SF2 or at least in the arcade. But that's basically a guess and I don't know why we were snobby about it and we certainly couldn't have explained ourselves at the time. It seems like it should have been pretty impressive for 1995 when we'd probably only played a few games of VF1.

I think it retrospect it was because '90s fighting game people were in arcades and console-only fighters were consistently shameful during the fighting game craze. Think Rise of the Robots. So you have to be good enough to transcend that reputational hit and can't just be fine.

Only in the arcades. I think my local arcade might still have it up and running, but they specialize in older cabinets whereas the closest Capcom owned arcade which was the only time I ever played Toshinden 2 in arcades no longer carry it. The Capcom owned arcade is mostly crane games these days anyway. It says it right there on that flyer it is for CPS2 conversion.

I probably could have been a Saturn kid if I'd ever seen VF2 in a kiosk or at a friend's in 1995 but it might as well have never existed for me. And the arcade version was such an expensive cab it probably was only in pretty major urban arcades that I never saw either. And VF3 was even more rare to get experience with. For many years the only reference I had mentally for VF was the original game that never felt like anything but a tech demo you put two bucks into then never play again.

I love the entire series and played nearly every title in it and most ports and side games too (except the Wii game that only shared the name), but calling any Toshinden game quality is a huge fucking joke. They had many good ideas and even some firsts (sidesteps, attacks that hit in all directions or followed sidesteps, back attacks doing double damage making sidesteps useful for more than just dodging). The character designs, music, even the graphics were all fucking great, the levels looked awesome, but THEY ALL PLAYED LIKE ASS. There's a reason they made the game have 1-button super move inputs, because the controls were fucking garbage in every single entry.

And after the first game they just started stealing everything from other games. TSD2 got super meters from SF, TSD3 got clone characters from Tekken, TSD4 got 8-way free movement from Soul Edge (you had to hold both shifts to be able to run in all directions).

Toshinden and Gouketsuji Ichizoku are the two fighting games I most want to get modern sequels. Unfortunately the latter is owned by Fatlus, which is owned by Sega, so there's 0 chance of them making a new game for it. Even Matrimelee was completely unexpected, and they reused the sprites from that for 4 games.
I think there was some Pachinko game that had 3d models for some of the characters, but that was so long ago they'd probably be unusable today.

Fighting games are too niche nowadays. I have my doubts even an actual Soul Calibur would succeed. They would need a massive budget to make it look amazing to have any chance, and still we have people dooming about VF6 which is doing just that.

I mean, a big reason people parrot about why the new Fatal Fury failed is that no one is interested in a franchise that has been dead for over 20 years, with dated designs. In the sense that even if they had the best graphics and did everything right they would still be facing an uphill battle against more stablished franchises. Hell, even the latest Mortal Kombat wasn't a big success and that is a huge franchise. Bringing back Toshinden of all things that never had a good reputation and has no real fgc nostalgia would be a big risk.

IIRC, the developers of Guilty Gear said they're banking it all on the latest season, because the game didn't make enough money to continue development.

MK1 devs basically put the game on life support.

Only Street Fighter has a reliable playerbase. Even Tekken vets hated 8.
Anonymous No.11974715
>>11974712
I'd say in some cases it's just inflated budgets. Most fighting game devs would kill to sell as much as T8 or MK1, but MK1 in particular was clearly such an expensive AAA project with real life celebs and such that the expansion not being a huge success is enough to deem it a failure.

Fighting games are basically a "solved" genre, like how EA has "solved" sports games. The playerbase has decided on what the Name Brand of this game genre is and will not try anything else for any reason. If you are not Street Fighter, Smash Bros, or (maybe not anymore) Tekken, you are nothing. Sheer momentum of having the most players means that's the only place players want to be.

Any company who wants to bring a fighting game franchise out of retirement needs to change genres to a musou or something instead to have a chance. Sega is about to feel a NGS-tier failure with VF6 I'm afraid.

Anonymous No.11976346

>VF is like the most popular game ever in Japan
No, most fighting games have a diehard audience in Japan that still have regular big tournaments including Virtual On, Bloody Roar, and even Super Dragonball Z. VF certainly has more than those, but it's still dwarfed by SF and Tekken.

EVO also has plenty of meme games and dead games as side shows to fill slots, this means nothing. Add that to the recent "hype cycle" Sega is paying out for VF, and you can see it's not really organic interest.

Yet it was huge in japan because of normalfags and weebs, but also you can blame the quick culture shift there where the vanilla otaku who knew of Viper and rance series died and it was replaced by normalfags and winemoms, said winemoms who are also fujos.
It seems that everything bad in japan that is happening to japan these days, can be always tracked back to 1995-1996.

All in all, it's probably one of DreamFactory's worst offerings but it's not the worst game ever. To be fair, that's what most of the Toshinden games are like so there's probably a decent amount of fun to be had with it if you can get friends to play it with you.
