Reggie and Iwata said back during E3 2004 that the DS would be a third line in addition to the console and the Game Boy. Nobody believed it because it sounded so stupid. Either way, GBA continued being supported with new releases until 2006.

The GBA is actually quite powerful and way better than the GBC. Worse sound and resolution but WAY more powerful than an SNES.
Anonymous No.11972476
The PSP forced Nintendo's hand.

Also, don't forget that the GBA didn't really die until about 2006. I wouldn't say the DS picked up momentum until the Lite released and there were games like MKDS, NSMB Pokemon DP, and Metroid Prime Hunters.

The arrival of a portable PS2, scared Nintendo.
Imagine being Nintendo and seeing people playing Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and other JRPGs in 3D everywhere in Japan.

At the time Nintendo said that the DS was a "third pillar" and it wouldn't replace the GBA, but it didn't work out that way.
Anonymous No.11972527
Piggybacking off what the past few anons have said, the DS had a slow adoption rate during its first year and a half because not many people were willing to pay $120 for a portable console with a game library that was kind of weak. In practice, the GBA performed just fine in 2005, and anecdotally I can say the only people I knew at the time with DSes were rich kids. It wasn't until the DS Lite came out in mid 2006 at a cheaper price point and with better games that the DS family started selling well enough that Nintendo could comfortably retire the GBA.

It was all part of Shitoru Shitwata's master plan to memory-hole old (GCN/GBA and earlier) Nintendo and replace it with Nutendo (DS/Wii "blue ocean strategy" casual-pandering) ASAP.

Same reason why he delayed Twilight Princess for a year to add waggleshit and make it a Wii launch title, even though it was perfectly ready to release on GameCube in 2005.

Two screens were completely unnecessary.

Nintendo should've gone forward with the original "Game Boy Iris" concept which was just a successor to the GBA with better hardware/more buttons etc.

Would've happened if not for Shitwata.

They didn't. The GBA still got good games well into 05 and 06. Like other anons said I think they were worried about the PSP so they made a "third pillar" in the DS and didn't want to outright replace the Game Boy in case it didn't do well. Once Mario Kart DS and the Lite came out and started printing money then they decided to drop it.

Nintendo did the same with the Switch 1. Initially they were very insisted it was not a replacement for either the Wii U or 3DS but was its own thing. It's just a cover-your-ass thing they did every time they came out with a weird concept that they weren't sure would be a success.

Interestingly I think Iwata said in an interview once they would've scrapped the Wii concept too if the DS had flopped. His whole reinvention of the company was riding on this device.

You do realise no one owned these things as they were retarded gimmicks for spoilt kids? 2001 the PS1/PS2/PC dominated. Why the fuck do you spam threads about these shitty kids toys that were not even as cool as the old grandstand led games. Why don't you get into retro games instead if spamming this retarded Nintendo garbage?

GBA sold over 80 (!) million units. Also it was affordable and powerful, perfect handheld. Shitload of SNES ports, even had a respectable-for-what-it-was low-res Doom 1 and 2 on it.

Because the GBA's hardware was severely outdated on release. Like, moreso than usual for Nintendo hardware. It could barely even do bad 3D, it would have been laughable as Nintendo's only portable option in 2004, it needed a replacement fast.

PSP would have killed the DS if Nintendogs hadn't come when it did, they were right to be scared. It wasn't obvious the DS would win the generation until Brain Training. Neither game was possible on GBA.

You mean all the other BACKLIT handhelds that could play the same games? One of them was also a cell phone btw, not that you'd remember because you weren't there. I love the GBA but the only reason Nintendo won was PokΓ©mon.

First of all, by cell phone, I assume you mean the N Gage, which came out two and a half years later. Second of all, none of the competition at the time had backlit screens. The Game Gear and Lynx were long dead. The competition was the Wonderswan and Neo Geo Pocket, and the GBA blew both of those out of the water in every way. Three months prior to the GBA, the WonderSwan Color was released, which still used a passive matrix display and inferior to the GBA specs-wise in every dimension. Please, do research before embarrassing yourself like this.

pretty reasonable considering how weak their home console sales were before the wii, so potentially losing the handheld console war too would be nintendo's death
