The Great Debate

N64 because analog stick. Bonus points for having the dpad far away from it.
Anonymous No.11973412
N64 is peak soul and feels great in the hands. Saturn is ideal for 2D games. Playstation is okay at best, the only controller design that hurts my hands after a while.

In case you missed the memo, the playstation crushed the competition.

Only one of these designs endured. (The six-button Saturn style is good for fighting games though)

N64 controller is only good for N64 games. Saturn controller is good for Saturn and all kinds of 2D games. PS1 pad (dual analog version) is overall jack of all trades master of none but it will work for all types of games.

Imo the PS1 controller feels super cheap. The Saturn controller feels almost premium and the N64 controller feels very premium.

If you don't need the sticks you can just get the Retro-Bit Saturn controller
They also sell a version with sticks and two sets of triggers but that version is annoying because they fucking hardwired the C and Z and L1 and R1 buttons together and they can never be mapped to different things. So I don't like that one.

No debate needed. Everyone knows that the Sega Saturn controller is the best controller.

This is just a switch controller. It seems like the PS1 Dualshock homogenized controller design. Sure there was input from Sega, with analog triggers and a higher set left analog stick present all the way back for the Saturn analog controller, but everything follows the PS1 pattern with the only variations being analog triggers and stick position. They all have 4 main face buttons, 1 D-pad, 2 sticks and 4 triggers/shoulder buttons.

they do for a few minutes until you look at the analog stick the wrong way and it goes all floppy.

Analogs are the death of gaming.

4 uniform face buttons are better for 99% of games

Of the three yea it did. Especially at the time. The psx controller is as basic as it gets and I love the dpad but picking it up does not feel good at all. And the fact that they revised it and the revision became their standard id say yeah, they knew the og was pretty shitty. The Dreamcast copied the 64 controller so Saturn was outdated and if their next console copied a previous gen’s controller I’d say that yeah, overall especially upon release, the n64 controller was premium. The fact that we STILL can’t get a decent copy of it in 2025 cements it even more. Go online, a beat up og controller for 64 still can go for a decent amount because people are literally trying to repair them themselves because they can’t be replaced (without a major investment). I’ll be testing one of the official wireless switch 64 controllers soon (just need to hook it up) and even that controller I’m told uses a different analogue construction so it may not even be as good as the OG.

TLDR: next gen consoles were copying n64 controller while the other players were busy improving their own controller while 64 was literal perfection for its system.

Just to add on: the GameCube controller is imo the single worst first party controller for any system I’ve ever played, so Nintendo literally was going backwards while others were taking the 64 design and improving it.

I've gotten N64 controllers recently for $20-25, so not too bad

it has 6 buttons just two of them are placed in a better position where they are more easily pressed. The only time 6 face buttons are better than shoulders is if you are playing a piano.

one i got from a retro games store near me
then ebay has them but i can't vouch for the quality obviously, it depends
i'd recommend just buying local so you can test the stick yourself

The PS1 controller was much more premium. The N64 controller felt like a children's toy and had a horribly designed stick that worse itself loose. Good technology for the stick, bad execution.

The original PSX controller is absurdly light, they feel cheap as hell to hold today. The DualShock was a huge improvement.

I have a huge list all you did was say “nuh uh”

Bro I’m holding both right now one was revolutionary and premium the other was as simple as super nes controller and not as quality.

We're talking about the Dualshock, right?
