How to play Dreamcast in 2025?
I was looking at some dreamcasts sold around here, learned that you can just buy a bluetooth adapter from ali to use any modern BT controller, and you can install an SD mod if the disc drive is dead.
That's cool and all, but my problem is this: from what I've read on it, it could only output 480p over VGA, and there's about zero alright CRTs with VGA inputs (only Loewe Aconda and similar Loewe models come to mind, and their VGA module was optional, so realistically you'd buy the aussie reverse-engineered bootleg instead for $100+).
Do I just say "fuck it" and plug it into my LCD? Will its 480p look just as shitty as xbox's on a 1080p screen?
Tell me how do you play your Dreamcast, anons, and how much do I really need the original controller/mem card.

Among TVs — yes. I ain't plugging that into a monitor.
I should've put some ragebait into the OP, nobody on /vr/ cares for an actual retro advice thread.

So I use the Dreamcast component cables from retro gaming cables UK. They have a switch for the resolution in the occasional game that's not compatible with VGA and they work very very well for me. They're a little pricey around 65 US plus shipping you're not looking at a super cheap product but it seems to cover all the bases with Dreamcast. Because I am also using a GDMU and open menu to load my games they usually come patched for VGA if they don't already support it. I actually can't remember the last time I had to switch to 480i except to play the House of Dead 2 and confidential mission on my 27-in CRT. Normally I play the games on my VGA monitor. This is just my preferred solution however there are other adapters that do clone this device but I will say the component video variants is not very good and has decent amount of signal noise. Maybe an HDMI variants will work even better but I can't attest to those myself.

So component is enough? Good news, thanks.
But fuck my life I guess, because I have an rgb-only 4:3 crt, a widescreen crt with 480p support that keeps stretching the image to 16:9 all by itself even if I turn that off, and an LCD with all the necessary inputs and settings, but it's an LCD with unavoidable input lag.
Maybe it's possible to disable the forced 16:9 stretching in the service menu somehow, that'd be my best bet. As for cables, I can just order the best one available from ali and call it a day.

You must have a really sad life. If you're not a samefag, it's actually even worse.

Toxic users that are too autistic to have a real conversation with each other. Should be locked up in asylums so normal people don't have to suffer your misanthropy. I'm optimistic that this could still one day be the case.

It looks like ass compared to a PC CRT or even an LCD, but sure, do what you want to do.

It's called a computer monitor. Unfortunately, CRT monitors are rare as fuck these days because they went out of fashion before CRT TVs did.

There is zero benefit to playing Dreamcast games on a CRT in 480p.
Its image quality is the cleanest out of any pre-HDMI console, looks exactly like a high-end PC or the era outputting the same 640x480 image. You'll get no advantages playing on a CRT, so just shove that shit into whatever display you're using for either your PC or modern consoles.
Unlike 240p where there's all sorts of bullshit required to get a decent signal, just about every high-res display made in the last 35 years supports 640x480 with no issues so long as they've got an option to scale the image in the proper aspect ratio.

You'll still need a VGA adapter, and most modern displays don't have that anymore.

You really don't need a CRT for a dreamcast. Yeah it's good and all, but you can honestly still have just as much fun with a regular monitor.
Your priority should just be having fun now, autistically hunting down a CRT later. I remember being stoked to play PSO on a huge fucking TV we had in the early 2010's and that thing was 1080p, and I just didn't care.
Great console, would recommend it. If you get a CD writing drive and find some good quality CD's you can also burn games to them, it has no DRM features.

Not OP here, and a bit of a dumbass when it comes to tech. I have a retrotink 5X, and I'm considering buying these component cables. Would those component cables + my retrotink be a good way of playing Dreamcast on a modern display? I don't have any CRT or VGA anything.
