/vroom/ the garage
for the eternal discussion, arguing, and showboating of racing games

alright you tune-up nerds, why the fuck cant I downshift in richard burns rally? I can shift up whenever I want, and the game recognizes the shift input I set when I want to downshift, but actually racing on a course or in driving school and its like it never existed. Do I need to set a button to clutch on my wheel?

Ah, /vroom/... that brings back memories...

Is there a game that actually mixes combat and racing well? Carmageddon kinda sucks when you actually want to race, Destruction Derby has more actual racing but it doesn't reward being aggresive that much, Twisted metal is pure combat and, uh, there is also Mario Kart but that is kind of a whole different genre.

demolition racer is destruction derby if destruction was actually rewarding, i'd say similar things about flatout, in terms of games with weapons wipeout's already been mentioned, rollcage is cool but the weapons don't feel that great, blur was good and split second was excellent but i don't think they count as /vr/ yet

I get you're trying to look for some hidden gems in the street racing genre, but it's honestly a solved game at this point. NFSUG-Carbon, Midnight Club 2-LA, TXR0-3-D2. those are the only ones worth really playing.

SRS has dope bodykits for the time (actually licensed rather than the weird shit NFS had) and I love the vibe of it (also had weeb liveries which were sorely missing from every other street racing game despite there being at least 1 itasha at every cruise at the time) but yeah the tuning is ass, iirc you just need to get parts from the right manufacturer depending on the car.
>>11979751
I liked that you could land on other racers and just instantly take them out of the running.
>>11979802
Fuck you Juiced is also fun.

I'm thinking of getting into Ridge Racer 4 for the aesthetic alone, looks iconic and amazing...

...does it actually play well though?

Yeah, but /vr/ hates it because it's not le hardcore

>looking for hidden gems
no, it was just there on steam and i decided to finish it for once since the progression system is gay and retarded but the game itself is just kinda OK
>>11980008
also yeah, juiced 1 is great and juiced 2 might be one of the worst sequels of all time
>>11980184
its a ridge racer game so it plays like shit by default, the retards at namco could never understand that car games are fun when the car feels like a car and not trains made to look like cars
