I've been playing Ninja Warriors and loving it, especially with my boy Raiden here, but what other beat em ups are good?
Do they really suffer from bad mechanics and infinite exploits, or is there true depth and mastery to be had in this genre?

>Ninja Saviors
Stupid-ass copyright laws ruined the title. Because once you beat the game, you learn that these ninjas aren't saviors at all, but merely putting a new despot into power after killing the previous one.

Yeah wtf was up with that
They pulled something similar in Rayforce, Taito just love depressing futility for some reason

I recall multiple Darius endings where the players suicide themselves in futility to stop the enemy forces.

Final Fight, Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 4 (not retro and kind of a different style of game), Bare Knuckle 3 with a fan translation patch, Alien vs Predator... but I don't know of any other good one in the same style as Ninja Warriors, where it's not a belt scroller, hopefully some other anon knows something

>is there true depth and mastery to be had in this genre?
Dunno about depth, the fun to me is managing different kinds of enemies in a group while trying to survive. It's the kind of genre where if it's too easy you find yourself just brainlessly mashing the attack button and it's no fun.

That makes the title even better IMO.

In all fairness, that's what Smash players do all the time LMAO.

>zoomers conflating exploits as cheating
is literally what everybody has done in any competitive game from the start. Combos exists at all because of an exploit in the original SF2.

That's really cool! I had no idea combos were an accidental invention.

That speech was supposed to be included in the original arcade, but for some reason it went unused and that's why it feels so empty.

Really? That's interesting since I played the cabinet at Disneyland in 1987 (it wasn't there in that one either) and later learned that it wasn't wide released anywhere else until '88. Maybe the Disney people saw another version and were like: "Ha..no."
You think?

Seems to be an oversight, since it's missing even from the japanese version and got restored in both PCE (text) and SCD (audio) ports.

Some slightly overlooked but really fun ones are Violent Storm, Ninja Baseball Batman and Sailor Moon (Arcade).

If you found the exploits yourself, it's fair.
If you learnt them from watching a fucking TAS "longplay" on youtube, you didn't beat the game.

Watch this, it correctly explains how beat em ups don't have mechanics because they're a modern crutch and instead just have proper fundamentals and techniques
Modern reviewers and gamers think they're simplistic quarter munchers but fail to see how the self serve difficulty and lack of mechanical Darwinism improve the game

It might be because I'm just a retard, but for some reason I have really bad depth perception with beat em ups where you can move up and down
I can never tell if they're exactly in my range or not

how do they not have mechanics? explain using your own words not some guy. like you could just say they have mechanics you don't like, that's understandable even if some dumbass would just say you got filtered.

Look, I get what he and you are trying to say. Modern games have tons of meters and gauges and subsystems that sometimes it feels like you're just playing an abstract resource management game and playing something like a card game wouldn't feel any different, even though you're playing what should've been an action game. Especially when, as he pointed out, in many of them spacing and positioning no longer matter. Also a problem in fighting games. But saying that any game at all has no mechanics is the worst possible way to express it and deserves mockery.

Exactly what I said. In a modern game you might use your i-frames dodge to dodge the enemy's homing attack, so that you can use your homing attack which has to be a fire attack because it's an ice opponent, and now you bait the next attack to parry which fills your super meter and increases your stylish points which increases your attack level which... meanwhile Final Fight has an attack button and a jump button. I think that's what he's trying to say.

>>11977726
It's an almost an hour long video with almost 40k views, too much effort for it to be bait. The post probably is, true, but the guy in the video did say those things.

I'm exaggerating for effect. In the video he shows a few modern games that I don't know well enough to criticize, but I do notice that nowadays you have souls-likes like Elden Ring where fights are less about spacing and positioning and more about being point blank using i-frames and parries while managing stamina until there's a gap on the enemy's string for you to exploit. And as I said, I do observe the same thing and same discourse happening in fighting games, where something like SF6 or FF:CotW have tons of meters and universal mechanics to the point where it feels like the characters themselves don't matter other than being different flavors of the same gameplans compared to older games.

That and English, the SNES cult classic was called The Ninja Warriors Again, and the 2010s remake is Subtitled, Once Again.

I suppose, but for an argument like that to work you'd have to delve deep into a ton of different games, and even the only conclusion is "games have mechanics lmao" which is retarded
