Some games have a 100% category, but even any% many games are not ruined by it

I think part of the fun of old speedrunning (I didn't really call it that at the time though) was ironically the casualness of it
As I said earlier, RE2 and RE3 has ranks with a timer (not sure about RE1), MGS has ranks at the end, even DKC had a little Cranky joke at the end about beating the game in 1 hour
I had a highschool friend who bragged a couple times he could beat DKC3 105% in 4 hours or something
Even the pros on SDA and youtube were more fun to watch, the gameplay often looked like how a normal person would play just much more efficient

I even remember my older brother "speedrunning" sonic and took some pictures with his film camera to send to a magazine, but turns out after the pictures got ready it was all white, apparently he took the pictures wrong and the room should have been way darker when taking the pics

Yeah I've always been fine with people speedrunning for its own sake and just trying to get under a certain time but turning it into some competitive endeavor where the differences between runs are measured in fractions of seconds kind of smells fishy to me. Is there any standardization to this shit? And if not, how can we rely on any times to be accurate down to tenths or even hundredths of seconds? Top Super Mario Bros. speedrun times are measured in frames. They don't inject a frame counter into the game or anything. You can tell how many frames a run is by counting framerules and going through the last second of 8-4 frame by frame and seeing how many frames elapse since the last tick of the in game timer.

honestly the timing method is probably not even the main problem, it's just everything being optimized and boring now
Trying to beat RE3 in under 2 hours as a bored teen feels more soulful compared to an adult grinding the game 10 hours a day and reseting all the time
little sidenote: a few years ago RE3 runners started using some sort of "grenade launcher tool" or whatever it's called, so they ALWAYS get the grenade launcher in the PD and don't have to reset when getting the magnum instead
These mfs ruined one of my favorite games to watch with this bullshit and since them I never really looked at speedrunners the same way again
But I understand there's no going back now and I'm not asking for anyone to cater to me, I'm just saying it's soulless now

Both speedrunners and competitive gamers enjoy the game so much that they don't want to move on after beating it. They wanna keep playing the same game over and over, but there's nothing else to do in it. That's where this kind of self imposed challenge comes from, pure harmless autism. However, I've seen people who are addicted to speedrunning and would pick up games they never played just to speedrun, and don't even know the plot or even know the parts of the game that aren't a part of the speedrun route, now those people are retarded.

When it stops being fun besides having your gaymer name on some ranking on a site and the actual speedrun permutates into something that doesn't resemble the actual game at all and you are backwards jumping to glitch through some wall to skip half the game and doing some rehearsed act instead of playing and reacting to the game and using your skill and knowledge to navigate the situation.

Unfortunately even those are a shitshow. 100% except we collect everything out of order and glitch our way into NPC scripts that award us items without doing any work.

Grenade Launcher Tool is so faggoted it's unbelievable. Glitches are obviously fine, but when the grind is rough you don't just mod out a feature of the game to make it easier. Complete homo choice by the community. Play the base game as is, and you'll get the amazing side effect of the speedrun not being optimized as quickly. It's also a game of mental stamina and perseverance, and every little corner-cut like that is catering to pussies.

Not to mention the RE community in general allows for literal cheating tools, showing the health of not only yourself but enemies as well, along with every hidden stat that isn't supposed to be visible to the player.

OP's being dumb. If you want to do speedrunning for the competition, why not choose the more precise way of measuring? If you beat another player by 0.06 seconds, do you want it not to count as a better time because you go by the game timer which sees them both as the same time? That doesn't sound very competitive.

nobody understands this, so i will go allcaps anon and explain it:

SPEEDRUNNING IS FAKE AND GAY BECAUSE IN NO OTHER SPORT (MUH E SPORTS) ARE YOU ALLOWED TO JUST TRY OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER UNTIL YOU **FINALLY** DO SOMETHING INCREDIBLE.

IN REAL COMPETITIVE SPORTS, THERE IS **PRACTICE** AND THERE ARE GAMES. THIS INCLUDES LITERALLY EVERY MAJOR SPORT, FROM GOLF TO BOWLING, TO BILLIARDS AND DARTS, TO BASEBALL AND TRACK AND FIELD.

SET A NEW WR IN PRACTICE RUNNING THE 100M DASH? OH GUESS WHAT IT **LITERALLY DOESN'T FUCKING COUNT BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T DO **DURING A SANCTIONED COMPETITION**.

HIT A 600 FOOT HOME RUN DURING BATTING PRACTICE? WHO GIVES A FUCK, IT'S ***NOT DURING A FUCKING GAME***.

MAKE A 7-10 SPLIT THAT YOU INTENTIONALLY SET UP FOR PRACTICE AND ATTEMPTED 30 TIMES IN A ROW UNTIL YOU GOT IT? LMAO

HOW THE FUCK DO GAYMERS NOT UNDERSTAND THIS?

it's literally a caveat of shit like gymnastics and track and field to KNOW that someone UNOFFICIALLY set a world record, but HAS NOT DONE SO YET IN ACTUAL SANCTIONED COMPETITION, SO IT LITERALLY DOESN'T COUNT.

this is because anyone, given chance after chance after chance after chance after chance after chance WILL be able to accomplish it. it's not even a big deal.

"speedrunning" is more like stupid fucking Dude Perfect shit where they like OH I'M GONNA TRY TO THROW THIS BALL OFF A BUILDING AND MAKE IT GO THRU THE HOOP 500 TIMES, OOOOH MY GOD ONE WENT IN!!!

it's not impressive BECAUSE YOU JUST SIT THERE AND DO IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

there is no stress. there is no competition. you're literally just sitting in your fucking underwear doing it over and over and over and over and over until you get a magical run.

but what gaymers don't realize is; that's true of sports, THEN THEY HAVE TO BE SO GOOD THEY CAN LITERALLY DO THAT IN A COMPETITION, AGAINST THE BEST IN THE WORLD, WITH MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHING.

LIKE YOU THINK USAIN BOLT COULDN'T RUN FASTER ON SOME JAMAICAN TRACK WITH NO ONE AROUND?

YOU THINK KLAY THOMPSON COULDN'T MAKE MORE THAN 14 3'S IN A 48 MINUTE PRACTICE?

YOU DON'T REALIZE HOW INSANELY GOOD THEY ARE BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO DO THESE THINGS ***ONCE*** WHEN THE TIME COMES. YOU GET ***ONE*** RUN.

that's how speedrunning should be, if we are to take it seriously. runs at home don't count. maybe for gamefaqs circa 2004 and speedemosarchive, but the way this shit is now, with people literally making millions of dollars of this shit, it needs to be WAY more regulated.

"practice" runs don't count. there should be more organized events. you do your speedrun ONCE at the competition. then we'll see who is ACTUALLY good.

it kills me to watch these fuckers and see a "run counter" that is like "oh this is the 35th time i've done this today, the 304th time i've done this run this week, AND OMG I TOTALLY BROKE A WORLD RECORD!!!"

the fuck you did lmao.

PRACTICE
RUNS
DO
NOT
COUNT

make it sanctioned events only, one run per day only, etc etc. there HAVE to be rules for this. you can't just let some tranny with no job play a game literally ALL DAY every day and expect them to, even if literally by accident, have a perfect run.

OF COURSE that's going to happen, given a large enough sample size. and it takes ALL the magic out of it.

every person in any fucking sport does loads and loads of practice in order to get good you dumb gorilla nigger. didn't read the rest of your faggoty screed

okay, and if they set "world records" during those practice sessions, it literally doesn't count.

that's my entire point.

all speedrunning is literally practice. therefore, when someone "sets a new world record" they actually don't.

they would not be recognized records for ANY other sport. literally ANY sport. fucking figure skating even. trampoline. gymnastics. skateboarding. competitive breakdancing.

you CANNOT set a world record in practice. it HAS to be at a sanctioned event.

EVEN THO A GUY LITERALLY JUST KICKED A 70 YARD FG LIKE A FEW WEEKS AGO. EVEN THO IT WAS EVEN IN A FUCKING GAME.

BECAUSE
IT
WAS
A
PRESEASON
GAME

IT
LITERALLY
DOESN'T
COUNT

that's a far cry from the olympics and you know it. and to top it off, according to your autism, they would have to host a speedrunning competition for every game that exists on this planet, not to mention invite hundreds of thousands of speedrunners just for one popular game, or go through a candidate sorting process by sorting out the low score candidates from speeddemosarchive, a website you apparently despise for not being real e-sports (which nobody in the speedrunning community asked for, anyway)

At the very least, you should have to have an official judge with their own official timing equipment present in order for your run to count as a world record. You should be given a limited number of attempts and a minimum length of time you have to wait to request a new judgement of you fail.

Not really. There's a difference between a 2-6 hour playsession or the occasional day long playsession with friends for fun and for a minor personal challenge and practicing the same shit over and over for thousands of hours just to get a marginal increase in speed so you can get famous among a group of spergs that take gaming way too seriously.

Speedrunning in the sense of trying to achieve a personal best between you and friends where you play the game as intended is not the same as professional speedrunning, The former is just a cool way of having fun like playing fighting games casually between you and a group of friends. The latter is like the competitive cyborgs in the FGC, but 100000x worse really. At least the FGCfags tend to be functioning outside of practicing tech for hours upon hours.
