Why was Engrish so common in Japanese games prior to like 1990? Aren't they supposed to be good at English?

Every Japanese person knows like 1000 words of English, but they are either stock words like "Start" and "Continue" that they know from media and games or they are Wasei Eigoisms that mean completely different things than they mean in English.

Was it too difficult to find an example of what you're talking about, or do you simply not know that the japanese teach english differently? Uncultured frogposter.

I don't really follow. You're suggesting they might have been good at translating but willing to go out of their way to translate badly in order to save money? I mean it'd be extra work to make such basic errors as "a winner is you" or whatever if you were actually fluent in English. Why wouldn't you think they simply weren't fluent in English?
