Final Fantasy Adventure
This was fucking amazing, absolutely on par with classic Zeldas and Ys I+II. Do you guys like this game?

>only in Japan so no one played it

So what's wrong with the GBA version? Near as I can tell, they basically got rid of the lingering Final Fantasy references to fit it more in line with Mana.

You mean Secret of Mana.
Do Manafans abbreviate both games as SoM?

>Sometime between 1985 and 1987, the game was advertised in Famitsu magazine as simply Excalibur. It was originally supposed to be an RPG trilogy for the Famicom Disk System and set in actual Medieval Europe.[6] Hiromichi Tanaka wanted the game to be something like a real-time version of Wizardry.[7]
>The game later remerged as Seiken Densetsu.[8] The first installment in the series, The Emergence of Excalibur, was only supposed to be the beginning of the story, which would consist in a five-game series that would unfold over several generations.[9]

Plus I'll add that the convoluted changes to what was intended to be a simple plot make absolutely no sense. Pic related; when even TV Tropes can't make sense of this horseshit, you know you're in trouble.

>The game later remerged as Seiken Densetsu.
They were unrelated projects. Square reused the trademark, but very little if any of the Disk System development was carried over. Square essentially chose Final Fantasy over the original Seiken Densetsu, which died with the Disk System.
Not the only time Square flipped names around, Secret of Mana was tentatively a CD game in the numbered Final Fantasy series before being codenamed "Chrono Trigger" and then became a SD/Mana game later.

It’s a very flawed game AS a game but it’s legitimately a beautiful piece of art. What they did to the series with those 3D abominations should be criminal under Japanese law

I've only seen Secret of Mana abbreviated that way for historical reason; I think I've seen Sword of Mana as "SwoM" but I could be wrong.

Maybe it's finally time for me to give this game a go. I mean people claim that it plays better than the Gameboy game and I don't think the first one is all that flawed so I'll most likely enjoy Secret of Mana

Honestly you can just ignore the power gauge and play it like a regular ARPG. And it starts filling up pretty quickly later in the game when you gain enough levels

This. You can use weapons like Zelda and meter is just for special attacks. It's not like Secret of Mana where weapons are useless during cooldown.

I wonder how far along the prototype was, since they had screenshots for it and were taking pre-orders.
I know the Square of that era is notorious for deleting and writing over old projects, but I'd love it if the Emergence of Excalibur prototype still existed somewhere.

Judging by what I've read this game would've made Kawazu's shit look like perfectly serviceable and accessible RPGs. Whenever you see
>was too ambitious for the system
when reading about cancelled video games (especially if it's an RPG) you know it would've been a dumpster fire. But hey at least we have that nice promo art by Haruhiko Mikimoto that one of the anons has posted

What do you mean, Kawazu's shit is perfectly serviceable and accessible. I've never had trouble getting into a SaGa game.
But honestly, it wouldn't be worse then Wizardry or old Dungeon Crawls.

Not for most people, I got filter'd by both FF2 and FF Legend. But not because they were brutally difficult or anything like that, you just need to have a specific mindset to enjoy this kind of RPGs which makes them very niche. Honestly I made a bad comparison, I don't think that FF2 and FF Legend are bad games but that Seiken Densetsu FDS game would've definitely been unplayable garbage. But still yeah I'd play the prototype

Autism time:
>you get the samurai armor + helmet in the final dungeon
>Masamune, which is basically a katana, is the strongest sword in the NES/FC FF games, games that Seiken Densetsu constantly references
>but you still get Excalibur as your final weapon

I don't remember if the original game mentions it, but "Excalibur" in the Mana games is supposed to be another name for the Mana Sword. I think that was first established in Secret of Mana. They went with Excalibur in the Game Boy game as a callback to the canceled game, but the Final Fantasy weapon isn't the same blade.

The problem is that Excalibur and Sword of Mana are actually two separate weapons in Secret of Mana and to my knowledge there are virtually no mentions of the Sword of Mana in FF Adventure, it's called エクスカγƒͺバー in the Japanese version which is, well, Excalibur

The Mana Sword in Secret of Mana is an upgrade to the Rusty Sword, just like Excalibur was in the first game...
Didn't they replace Excalibur with the Mana Sword in both Sword of Mana and Adventures of Mana? I always assumed the Secret of Mana intro was retconning the Mana Sword as the titular OC holy sword.

no, its good for a gameboy game though. compare the music in ys to the boops on a gameboy its not even comparable.

Yeah they retconned it in the remakes but still, Excalibur exists as a separate weapon in Secret of Mana which would make you think it's the same legendary sword from FF Adventure and the sword you get at the end is even more powerful but apparently this isn't the case

Once upon a time I feel some of the denizens here would have thrown themselves at the project but not anymore. I’ve unpacked the .jar file and, while the art files are all sitting free and looking amazing, there’s no separate text file of the game script and I lack any skills in this department. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful update

Huh? Excalibur in SoM is just a different upgrade and form for the Mana Sword, and only about mid-level at that. It's the exact same Mana Sword in all its forms (lampshaded by the opening text-crawl) and you only get to unleash its fullest power in the last boss fight.

I just beat it yesterday on the Switch. The Collection of Mana version.
Still a fun and charming game. My only dislike is the thing another anon already mentioned, the constant menuing to change weapons or discard an item, so you can open the chest that is blocking the exit.
