this starts out with st improvements on the first game, with a bigger world, multiple party members, more interesting spells, etc, but as it wears on things like the mazelike dungeons and stupidly high encounter rate just make it fucking insufferable. why make so many improvements and then decide that you just want to piss the player off the entire game? also erdrick's sword not being the best sword but the rest of erdrick's gear being the best just really fucking annoys me. it fucks with my autism to have to t have the full set equipped.

I loved the combat and the dungeons.
Also people these days tend to fail to realize that this game laid the groundworks for what it means to be a JRPG

A random example would be that everyone would take the dungeon themes this game has for granted, like the volcano dungeon etc but no, this was all novel, in fact the marketing made a big deal of how the game had dungeons (underground caves) AND towers.

most o the dungeons ar pretty cool, but the fucking lighthouse and the cave maze to the last town are fucking terrible. they wouldn't even be bad if you didn't get into a random encounter every 3 goddamn steps. otherwise i love this game, the combat itself is great, it just gets really annoying when it interrupts you trying to solve a maze so often.

The moment you see like 6 enemies ganging up on you is when you realize why the first game is so much better

Pretty sure 5 is the maximum and it's super rare. Still, multiple enemies is precisely what makes the combat awesome

> a random encounter every 3 goddamn steps

The encounter rate isn't consistent, the game is designed so that you'll get several encounters in a row and then the game will leave you alone for a little while to explore. It's not like Final Fantasy which has the same % chance every step; but people tend to look at the half full glass like it's like entirely filled up.

This is pretty much how I felt. I, III, and IV are all so much better.

Makes it tedious, specially early on
DQ1 being a literal 1vs1 rpg was awesome

Man that artwork is so fucking cool and soulful. I know I won't live long enough to see it but I hope one day the fantasy genre can go back to looking like this.

I liked DQ2, but it's obvious how unbalanced it is even without knowing the dev stories.
Especially fuck those enemies that steal MP, and fuck the last 2 floor encounters in Rhone.
Still enjoyed it, but I see why DQ3 got so popular after the first two games.

If you played the US version, you did play the version that was rebalanced.
And the differences are "Wow, it's fucking nothing!"

whats soulful about throwing away art from one artist and redrawing it to try to sell more copies? Its literally the opposite of soul.

This is the first time I've ever seen the North American box art for this game. Boy, is it hideous.

The game wasn't balanced shithead they last second just lowered some numbers. Was barely playtested.
Still not as hard as people used to claim though.

> just lowered some numbers.

It's an RPG, lowering the numbers is called rebalancing.
The US version also added a whole new intro, replaced password saving with battery saving, and fixed a number of glitches. It wasn't just "last second" stuff, they had YEARS to think about what they would rebalance and in the end it's fucking nothing.
"Even the devs thought it was unbalanced" is an overblown opinion, people read that and start to imagine the whole game should be different. The reality is that the US version got the rebalancing the devs wanted and in the grand scheme of things it's fucking nothing and only leads to a bit less grinding in the 2 moments of the game that require the most grinding (the start and after you get the boat).

Throwing away a nicely drawn picture of extremely stupid-looking babies inexplicably fighting monsters with their stupid fat baby bodies and replacing it with a cool picture that actually looks good is soulful, because the new picture is soulful and the old one was bad.

People who prefer the North American box art probably think those stupid paintings of dogs playing poker are the pinnacle of art.

What are you talking about, anon? That picture is great. Dogs are both physically and mentally incapable of playing poker, and yet, there they are, doing the impossible! It really makes you think.

Nothing with toriyama artwork would have been successful in the US in the 80s, murricans did not learn to appreciate his whimsy until dbz aired on toonami.
