IPS mods for dmgs are fucking stupid. Okay, some of the screens are busted, sure replace them whatever. But I think the IPS screens look like dog shit in person.
I was using a GB pocket to play tetris/dr mario/puyo/bust a move etc for a couple years and it wasnt hard to see at all. I just had a reading light in my livingroom. Simple as.

I know it was fuzzy but was it always this bad or does the screen degrade over time?
It's been decades since I last touched the gameboy.

My buddy in the 80s had one whose screen was that bad. I thought it was a cool gadget but I couldn't take that fuzzy green screen.

I'm glad it's in good shape again but it seems like if you're going to go as far as screen mod a Game Boy, you should just do an AGB. You can play cartridges from every generation on arguably the most comfortable form factor.

They tend to develop oxidized connections for the LCD in the ribbon cable, This is fixable with a soldering iron. the blank lines are horizontal however you're screwed. I don't think there's any significant decay in the old DMG screens. There is slight variations in the screens however.

Yeah, I have two original GameBoys, and one does look a little bit better than the other one. The difference between my two GameGears is much more striking, thought the display connection style is different, so maybe that has as much to do with it as the LCD itself.

The OP is actually a fairly good looking example. The display always had a poor clear->black->clear response time, it's why all the reviews of games make a point of describing the blur factor and why certain awesome games were reviewed poorly due to too much detail in the scrolling backgrounds making it hard to follow.
The green tint is a bit strong, but that's likely more a result of modern LED lighting and a camera phone than an actual problem with the device. We used incandescent bulbs and the MFing sun which mitigates that somewhat. Modern lighting fires heavily green light at a yellow emitting phosphor to approximate quality lighting, and so something with a green bent like the GB will look really green. But go outside and it'll be less apparent.

I get that this was the technology of the time, that Nintendo was right to use it and it's why they won over the Lyxn and Game Gear, which is their whole strategy that works even now with the Switch beating over the PS4 and PS5... but I'll always despise every single Game Boy model before the GBA SP, playing on a screen with no backlight is simply uncomfortable, it sucked.

I'm glad nowadays we don't have to deal with that anymore.

OP's video probably looks somewhat worse than that specific unit does in person. It wasn't THAT bad on a real new Game Boy back in the day, but it wasn't a lot better. My current Game Boy seems to have lost some contrast over the decades and is a bit hard to use because of that, but it still looks modestly superior to OP's video if the light is right. (I had the problem with vertical blank stripes and recently "fixed" it with a soldering iron, but the contrast problem remains.) Blurry movement was always a problem on this crappy hardware. The Game Boy's screen was disappointing to a child accustomed to the NES, even when it was brand new.

Well, at least until the SGB came out, that is indeed the only type of display on which they were intended to be played by end users. Devs (and maybe even magazine writers?) would use WideBoys, and stores sometimes had those big demo kiosks powered by DemoVisions, but those were obviously not intended home use scenarios. I still think they fucked up on the first DKL and got too focused on Super GameBoy playability without taking into consideration that their graphics looked like blurry vomit on an actual GameBoy.

A fair number of games do play some impressive tricks that exploit the microhues offered by the yellow-green background. It's generally subtle stuff and so not TOO much was lost when Nintendo started offering other official ways to play Game Boy games. But still, the original display is technically the only one that unlocks all the features of at least some significant games.
