I actually replace it with the OLED screen and it's pretty gorgeous.
Still have a second unmoded GBC too.

I had a GBC with a UV damaged screen so I bought one of those drop-in backlight screen mods for it. It's nice for playing picross in bed or whatever but I normally just play my unmodded GBC instead when I don't have to worry about angling my gamer lamp at the screen properly to be able to see anything.

I’ve modded one pocket with a broken screen and really liked the result. I selected a screen with the same size as the original and that could “emulate” the pixel grid, looks really nice.

I was planning to do it on a color with uv damaged polarizer but I managed to replace it, so I’m going to stick with the original screen.

NTA but it's manageable and even SOVL with things like the RetroArch XMB and a telescopic controller, my BSP D6 has a nice PSX aesthetic I quite like and it's pretty good and comfortable for the cheap price. Of course a dedicated device is better for most people in general, but this is a comfortable setup I recommend if you prefer just getting a cheap controller and all.

GBC screen isn't too bad. The lack of a backlight sucks but in ideal room conditions it's very much playable, and the battery life is excellent thanks to it.
DMG and GBA screens suck ass though. GBA especially is literally unplayable for most games due to its horrendous ghosting.
