Retro pet peeves pt.2
>Rhythm game
>That one beat you have to hit that doesn't make any sense, it's off rhythm and just put arbitrarily by some dev who mysteriously "heard" it, which makes getting a perfect score almost impossible

One more
>Game has inverted axis for camera for some goddamn reason, both X and Y
>Go to options, change them to normal
>It works but any special stage / minigame still has inverted Y axis

Parappa the Rapper's Chicken stage is deliberately mistimed on all releases.

Normally you have to improvise with extra inputs to get a good score somewhat in tune with the beat, but only for this one stage with the chicken are you basically required to do it to even finish the stage at all.
If you try to match the button prompts, you'll get a game over.
If you try to match the beat of the song, you'll get a game over.
You MUST be off-tempo and do constant mistimed button presses to pass.

Everyone calls it a "bug" but I'm fairly certain even the new remaster is the same exact way.

God im playing blood omen 2 on ps2 and it pisses me off that it has inverted camera but only vertically, and only when youre not aiming. Aiming has normal controls.
Completely schizophrenic

I know, right. It's especially dumb because the whole logic for inverting Y axis goes like:
>it's actually like in old PC flight sims! They came before console controllers had analog sticks!
Or
>it's supposed to control like an actual video camera, like this big heavy unit you tilt down to look up!
Then suddenly they go
>oh but this portion controls normally lol

>huge difficulty spike in the last couple of levels after you've already spent over an hour getting there only to not beat it.
I'm looking at you, Batman (1989) on Game Boy... it was a pain to finish 4-2 and the boss against the Joker.

No one actually knows the timing in parappa 1, it's not just a stage 4 thing. Parappa isn't programmed correctly. They play the .xa for the audio and start the game timer. However they didn't implement any feedback so the game has no idea if the audio is synchronised to the logic. This leads to people thinking they have to press the buttons in time to the beat and not the beat bar but that's wrong, sometimes the input lag + tv lag might sync up in such a way that it appears the audio is correct and the visuals are wrong, but other times it's the reverse. Sadly there's no consistent, repeatable fix for this.
Fortunately however the game logic itself is inherently broken and you can learn a pattern of mashes that the game interprets as COOL! letting you avoid the timing disaster almost entirely.

I think the mapping is just really unintuitive.
Like when she says
>Crack crack crack! The egg into the bowl!
and you try to do it to the beat you get
>Crack Crack Crack- Egg- Into- Bowl
So you really have to hit the buttons to the beat of the first word in the sequence, not the one with the most emphasis like this
>Crack Crack Crack THE Egg into THE bowl
Parappa's voice is the main feedback cue, listen to it being played correctly and compare with how it sounds when you play
