As someone who is a complete SEGA virgin other than Sonic, what games would you recommend from when they actually made CONSOLES?

As far as their actual home console games go I recommend playing Alex Kidd and Phantasy Star for the SMS, they are probably Sega's most important console games from the 80s, like their SMB1 and Zelda 1 so it's a nice place to start I guess

Master system:wonder boy 3 the dragon's trap

Megadrive :Shinobi 3

Saturn:Night into dreams

Dreamcast : Shenmue 2

The best Sega game for each system (haven't play the game gear)

A few of the best shmups:
>Eliminate Down
>Elemental Master
>Battle Mania: Daiginjou (Sometimes called Trouble Shooter Vintage. Has an English translation patch)
>Gley Lancer (Has an English translation patch)
>Thunder Force IV (Known as Lightening Force in the US)
>MUSHA

There's also Twinkle Tale (Has an English translation patch) but it's more of a top down run and gun. I still recommend it though

It’s a mech fighter, not really a dating sim, but you recruit cute chicks to be your navigators as you progress(each with different abilities) and you can level them up for different interactions and endings.

Unironically a Saturn hidden gem.

Go watch youtube videos about it seriously. You will at least see what you may like actually in action rather than get opinions from potential shitposters. There is plenty of great games for Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast and even Game Gear. Not sure about Master System since I never played that. You could probably skip 32X and CD without really missing anything at all.

In my opinion Sega was best with Genesis and Dreamcast.

Saturn: die hard arcade, pick up and play classic

Dreamcast: obvious choice is shenmue, but I’ll be a pretentious cunt and say Gundam Side story 0079 Rise from the ashes. Amazing game back in 99, favorite gundam game to date.

Sega X: too many..,halo, ninja Gaiden, breakdown, etc.

I have a huge list of recommended games on my phone that I've gathered from IRL people or hanging around on the Internet and yet 9 out of 10 times I end up browsing my collection of romsets and picking something that has a cool name.
Either that or I play a game where somebody praises it's strengths in detail in a way that actually makes me want to try it

As much shit as I'll get, honestly nothing (with a possible exception for stuff made by Yu Suzuki). SEGA did absolutely nothing great that wasn't essentially done better by a game on another console. The entire SEGA library consists almost entirely of 'rainy day games', things you'd find perfectly entertaining if you were stuck with nothing else to do, but nothing there's much reason to go out of you way to play.

I grew up with a Megadrive and barely have any desire to go back to it except for curiosity's sake.

>>11982379
Case in point, if these are your examples of the absolute best each console offers, then everything else is weaker than these games.

Streets of rage 2 does not get enough credit for being a perfect game. The beat em up genre was designed for arcades. Keep dumping in quarters and you see some crazy shit.
Streets of Rage 2 has a lot of different enemies, lots of different attacks, which already makes it a stand out in the genre. But it manages to be an ideal console game where you can actually get through it based on skill instead of dumping in quarters.
You can use positioning to avoid all damage and remain on offense for the entire game. Some enemies even have a brief β€œtell” animation before they attack. When I was a kid I could play this on the highest difficulty, something I never did unless it was needed for more content, and make it to the final level without losing a life. It really was built to be mastered.
