Could a major company release a game for a retro platform in 2025 and make more than five digits of profit in spite of emulation and flashcarts being widespread?

No, of course not. Also stop with the frogs.

The GBA shantae game was pretty successful I think but that's counting collector's edition stuff, and I doubt it was profitable to that degree

Assuming the game is sold for 30 bucks
Assuming 33% of retail price goes to the store
Minus the budget and manufacturing cost

It would take to sell between 6000 and 10000 copies to reach 100k profit for publisher/dev

Micro Mages on Steam, estimates 75k gross revenue

That's gross so you gotta take out 33% for the store. This also doesn't count its physical sales or any other potential store. On the plus side they were their own publishers, had few devs, and a small budget, so they didn't really need to reach your hypothetical 100k to make money.

So I think 100k is possible but unlikely, and it would take to spend more money on marketing than the average retro games does.

Of course, it already happens with companies like Retro-Bit and Columbus Circle. Probably Limited Run too despite their shit quality control. They have companies like Capcom and Rare collaborating through these kinda companies, and I doubt they are going through all the legal work for nothing.

For maximum profits, it would have to be someone like Nintendo and be on a platform that is easily accessible/still kept by many. If they had decided to manufacture actual official StarFox 2 carts in addition to the SNES Classic addition including it, they could have definitely reached that goal. Same goes for official EarthBound Beginnings carts, though probably less so, since Japan retro gamers would have less of a reason to buy it.

As far as a completely NEW, original title? I'm sure it would be possible, but it would need to be advertised and hyped up more. You put out a Nintendo Direct where Miyamutoid comes out and shows off a completely brand spanking new game he has decided to make for the GameBoy, and you could easily reach that goal. Hell, something like Earthion will probably sell pretty decently once the Genesis version is ready to go.

I don't think repro companies make that much profit; certaintly nowhere near the "100K per game" OP mentions.
Most of the price would be manufacturing and they always make printing in the low thousands.
Their business model is only sustainable because of the sheer number of repros they make so the same few collectors keep buying them again and again.

If they actually had this much profit they'd be able to manufacture the games *before* the customers pay for them.

100% certainly yes, but who knows what clever marketing or random viral explosion of success they'd have to rely on to pull it off.

Nintendo could make money right now if they licensed decent repros of:
GC Controller
Earthbound
SNES Street Fighter
Gen 1/2 Pokemon

Tough to speculate how many copies to make though. Something like Earthbound would do all its sales day 1, but legit Nintendo Pokemon rerelease would probably sell well for a while. Of course limited scam games managed to sell out of SNES Doom carts that cost more than a SNES, but that sort of thing shouldn't be encouraged.

They were making the GC controller for Smash up to like 2020 and it was identical to how I remember it.
They did reprints of Pokemon gen 4 in 2016 just before discontinuing DS production altogether, and of course they didn't make nearly enough so they all sold out quickly.

Honestly you'd probably have to biew the project as a mix of passion, resume building, and "hire me" bait, because that hardly seems worth the skill and effort once spread across a team.
