Castlevania: Symphony of the night
This game ruined my life.

It is utter fucking perfection and there will be nothing like it again. The GBA games don't look and sound this pretty.

It's very fun and full of personality and detail, but even if it wasn't as naturally prone to lose balance as it is by design (or lack thereof), it would still be too unchallenging to be called "perfection".

That's my point; even if you don't grind, any sort of real difficulty fizzes out not even 1/4 into the game. Making the game stay even remotely challenging requires experience with it and a lot of self-regulation, so it's somewhat self-defeating lol

The collecting and shit is fun enough though; good game for the ocd-prone.

Even if you do a low level run, its still easier than the classicvanias

I really dislike the jrpg/stats/levelling up aspect. In fact I extend this criticism to the other non-classic 'vanias too, I always find myself wishing they didnt do that whenever I play them

Completing the bestiary and item list would require turbo autism though. I like completing games, but I would never even attempt this
Anonymous No.11983568 >>11983570
>>11983567
Nah the bestiary is easy enough except for the famously scummy missable(s?). Getting a full item set does certainly require at least garden-variety autism though, I agree.

>easy enough

Anonymous No.11983586
>>11983570
Well, if you mean the part of the bestiary that overlaps with the item collecting, sure it's then basically the same thing. Still, I don't think even the rarest items take that much time, and finding a good hunting spot and optimizing your stats to do it efficiently is an interesting task in itself.

It's wasted time of course; but with games, what isn't? It's all good if you're having fun (it's certainly a problem if you're autistic enough to try even though you AREN'T having fun).

in portrait and ecclesia you can lock yourself at level 1 on hard mode. there's still some attribute leveling mechanic in the latter but that's more just a bonus for using certain elements

Aren't metroidvanias one of the most popular indie genres nowadays?
What I miss are pure platformers, those seem extinct. At least I have a lot of good ones from retro times.

>Some people aren't fit for discussion.
If you remove difficulty from castlevania all you have left is a boring platformer.
Game being easy ruins the loot system.
Game being easy makes all the different enemy patterns meaningless.
Game being easy makes exploration meaningless.
Maybe you enjoy shallow piss easy experiences, but i don't.

>If you [change formula of series] you don't have series anymore!
Except it has happened plenty of times and you still have series. People have just decided that Castlevania and Megaman should be the most immutable series in the industry for some reason.

Anyway, good job for being a parody of what I'm criticizing.

Yes, that is exactly how it works? If i change spyro to a 2d platformer, you don't have spyro anymore. This isn't rocket science. Change fundamentals, get different game.

And it's ok to get different games. Happens. Games can still be good.

We maybe would've got one more classicvania for the PS1 (we kinda did because no one played X68k before Chronicles) but 2d platformers were almost dead at the time anyway so getting quality metroidvanias is better than not getting anything at all

Honestly my biggest gripe with SotN is that Death's boss battle sprite is extremely lame compared to his design when you first meet him

Anyways, the DS games COULD come closer but the fucking graphic tileset backgrounds were fucking lame looking.

The inverted castle alone completely and utterly destroys that idea. And there's a fuckton more on the subject.

Saturn version has bonus content but is worse in every other aspect
It's kinda like the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4
