Saves carry over, though each disc has its own characters some events are linked and sometimes doing something in one disc will change something in another. At the end of disc 3 you get to play with all 3 of your teams too for the final fight(s).

Yes, you can use the official release of disc 1 and then the fan translation of 2 and 3
