Shmups
Can we get another good old fashion shmup thread going?

Any new shmups you recently learned off?
Any giving you hell right now?
Which are you planning on trying out soon?

Why in god's name is BLAZEON on the snes such hot garbage??

I probably won't get to playing it for a while though, I'm still grinding dfk and I've been a bit busy for gaming lately.

idk how snes blazeon fares compared to arcade, but the original is a really good game imho.

what was your issue with it?
Anonymous No.11984437 >>11984452

-Has some of the slowest scrolling I've ever seen in a shmup.
-There's actual small glitches that appear every now and then.
-There's way too many empty areas when flying by, nothing appears on screen for long amounts of time.
-Feels so life-less compare to the arcade
-When you beat the final boss, the game just loops back to stage 1, yea...they never got around in putting in the ending credits, so the ending theme is never used.
-The arcade opening is has also been removed.
-They removed some of the arcade lvls with crappier ones.
-They handled the gimmick of stealing robot forms in such a washed down manner, you only really need the robot with the spreader to get by the whole game, the rest are a pain, not only from their crappy weapons but also size.

Apart from the nicer composed music compare to the arcade, It's just such a poor, bland, port of the arcade game. Being less than a 'ok' shmup for the snes.

God, this game pissed me off with how much wrong it did. The arcade version itself is great but this game is overall a turd of a shmup in the snes library...

Ah, porting disaster, I see.

For a similar funny experience on SNES, Super R-Type is notoriously ridiculously laggy. I overclocked it and...well shit, it's really not designed to be played like that either. You're left with having to choose two bad options.

>Any new shmups you recently learned off?
Not really "new" but I decided to run at least one Yagawa game, and it was Batrider. Pretty fun one, way better than Gayregga. Can recommend.
>Any giving you hell right now?
Nah I got 1cc last thread after many attempts spent dying at the final boss. I will probably do another eventually to play the extra bosses, not back to back tho. I have recorded the run if anyone cares.
>Which are you planning on trying out soon?

Currently playing radiant silvergun the story mode

I have mixed feeling, the level design and presentation is top notch some of the best i have seen

But i hate the RPG system,if you don't do scoring the game became a slog ,on the contrary most boss became a joke if you're too overpowered
The game is also way too long

I think i prefer the arcade mode even if it's less ambitious
Anonymous No.11984683

Story mode's weapon leveling is so ridiculously undertuned that I'm not sure how much playtesting was done on it. They somehow made it so neither mode feels like the "complete" version of the game.

Very quick rundown:
>the game starts at a higher rank for some reason, to reset it you need to go in service mode and leave it by pressing START, not A. You don't have to actually change anything
>if you put more credits in the machine, regardless of whether they are used to continue or not, the rank will increase faster
>avoid unnecessary items, but don't worry about holding autofire
>especially avoid the extends at all costs if you are full, also note that grabbing an extend while you have 2 lives gives way more rank than grabbing it at last life which is almost nothing

There are other neat things to know like how the medal chaining works or the fact you can customize the ships to an extent by selecting them with a different button, check the wiki for that but there is a general rule.( A= stronger shot, B=stronger options, C=slower but strong both, D=faster but weaker)

Its rly good, fast paced and best thunder force I think. There's basically two ways to play that completely flip the experience.

>Free range speedrunning. Free range deals more damage the closer you are to the enemy, by basically meleeing enemies combined with overweapon it turns into a game about killing things as quickly as possible, bosses included. You won't deal with most attacks for real, but it still takes skill to get in everything's face and not die.

>Banning free range. Now the game becomes way slower and you actually have to survive boss attacks and deal with enemy waves properly. Much higher skill floor but also lower skill ceiling. Tactical weapon use is also fun.
Anonymous No.11986815

I stopped playing 2hu games after 1ccing TH14/DDC. Of all the ones I've played, I would easily recommend TH8/Imperishable Night. It has a lot of qol and it's the easiest one by a long mile.
>multiple shot types (team and solo) plus Reimu/Yukari homing is fucking broken
>different routes (stage 4s and stage 6s)
>pretty much all stages have dark backgrounds, which makes it easier to see bullets
>long as hell deathbomb window (requires two bombs tho)
>time orbs causes bullet cancel, cleaning the screen from bullets in their range
>very easy to reach max lives without scoring
>last word spells
>mokou
>you fight fucking reimu and marisa
>the entire OST
IIRC some of the modern 2hu games allow you to use certain items other than bomb, but it can give you bad shmup habits honestly. Better just learn how to dodge patterns and put the muscle memory at work.

I finally got a chance to play all of Gradius 3 thanks to the rewind feature in the new M2 port. It’s frustrating how close it comes to being a great game, it’s mostly really good except for a handful of fucking impossible parts. The moai level (which is the absolute farthest I’ve ever gotten legitimately), the cube level, and the final stage after the boss rush are complete dogshit. Cut those out and you have basically the perfect Gradius game, tough but doable with practice.

Try playing the first R-Type for a bit and maybe watch a few minutes of gameplay. Not even in the "you must study the run" way, but like how you'd naturally see someone play a few minutes of a cabinet while you wait for your turn. A lot of games like this are designed around that type of "learn from the bros in the arcade" context and are really obtuse when you're flying completely blind

They feel to me more like memorization puzzles than action games. You die at a section and then come back thinking if you should've been charging, or maybe firing, or maybe detaching the force, or if you stay in this corner and kill that one enemy first it might work. I got the same feeling from Image Fight but never got too far into that one.

While arcade gaming can be enjoyable and entertaining, it is essential to recognize the potential risks of addiction. The combination of the reward system, flow state, social interaction, and escapism can create a perfect storm for addictive behaviors. Excessive gaming, neglecting other responsibilities, withdrawal symptoms, and a loss of control over gaming habits are signs of potential addiction. Understanding the psychological factors that contribute to addiction can help individuals and gaming communities promote responsible gaming practices and seek appropriate support if needed.

Why do a lot of shmup players prefer an arcade stick over a dpad or keyboard? It seems like it'd be less precise considering you need to move the stick a set distance to register an input, rather than just pressing a button then having it instantaneously happen.

Either they like arcade sticks out of nostalgia or they also play genres where inputs are genuinely easier with analog controls(i.e. fightans and racing).
Can agree that no matter how you spin it, shmups have a gameplay style that works way better with pads. It's generally much easier to do small taps, but if I were to play a fightan I'd instantly switch to a console controller because I can't do 360s on a keyboard.

Curse would be the worst shmup on the system if it wasn't for bootlegs. You're completely fine in hating on it.

Bioship is a good game, but it barely plays like a shmup. You can think of it as a lightgun game where you also defend the ship. Except you have to move the reticle manually. The arcade version is also way, way better, so try that before you give up on this one...don't play on sega though.

Lots of other good games on the system. Try Eliminate Down for a good start.
