I don't blame people for thinking Sonic is shit because Sega was pumping out Sonic shovelware even during the /vr/ days. Like all of the SMS/GG games except 1 are at best really mediocre and the vast majority of them are complete garbage. Then there are also weird experiments like CD and Chaotix but I don't want to shit on them because apparently there are people autistic enough to enjoy this kind of games. It feels like Sega was doing its best to tarnish its mascots reputation even before they went 3rd party, seriously, they just didn't care much. The problem is that if Sonic had been only the original trilogy + the Adventure games + maybe the GBA games and Heroes it would have been a respected franchise. The only real historical revisionism is people nowadays saying that Adventure 1 is a bad game, yeah, but other than that? People are kinda right (no one shits on the Genesis games)

Sonic superstars had the original artist working on it, which brought the soul back. The art was peak, but arzest sucks at game design, so it sucks. It hurts so fucking bad, as a sonicfag that was a wet dream. While whitehead can make a good game, their unique art sucks, and doesn't have the same soul. We really just need the original artist in charge of art working with eveningstar on a new game. I fucking pleaded to sega in feedback for superstars to not give up, and just fix the game design. They have all of these assets they could easily polish it up iterate, and fix this.

I suspect it's because of the internet giving the more enthusiastic (nice way of saying autistic) fans so much room and a voice that so many people just don't want to be seen as being associated with this notable portion of the internet. It's kind of hard to make distinctions within fandoms these days so if you like something even a little it seems like you enjoy all of it. Plus general gen x cynicism.

The truth is that Sonic is just way more hit and miss than any of the other big mascots.
Like every Sonic game has at least one bad level. That's just the nature of Sonic.
And when you compare Sonic directly to Mario, Mario has clearly done a way better job of maintaining a standard of quality over the years. Like Mario's RPGs are actually good and beloved, and Sonic's single RPG was a notorious mess. Mario Kart is good and Beloved, and Sonic R is questionable at best.
And I say that as someone who actually likes Sonic more as an overall thing, because the sense of character and style is so much better.
